5ESS Switch
5ESS Switch is a telephone switching system first
introduced in 1982 by Lucent Technologies ( formerly
AT&T)

It has evolved into a truly universal digital switch that

meets all the telecommunications needs of the modern
information age.

5ESS has a wide variety of applications. It can serve as a

local, toll or international gateway exchange, or a
combination of these functions.
It provides the following major applications:

Toll or transit exchange
 Operator Services Position System (OSPS)
 Signal Transfer Point (STP) for a common channel signaling
system
 International gateway exchange
 Wireless (cellular) switch (Mobile Switching Center/Mobile

 Key Learning
Anywhere and Anytime PC upgrades and data retrieval is more
efficient for a highly mobile workforce who can remain in the field
performing their duties while the IT professionals achieve their goals
remotely.

Administrative tasks can be easily automated and executed

remotely, increasing efficiency and productivity.

GPS enabled laptops identify a computer’s location, which helps

track the progress of our mobile workforce and helps with asset
disablement and recovery in a security breach condition.
Truly securing patient data in a mobile environment is a
competitive differentiator for our visiting nurse business and a
comfort to our clients.  
 Alignment of the project with the
parent organization
The parent organization that is Lucent, as we know deals in
the equipments used in telecom sectors & this particular project
that is 5ESS switch. 5ESS switch basically a connector between
different types of communication devices.

So it was a project which was very much applicable for the
organization to develop because this organization deals with
this type of projects & Products.

They had enough resources which was required to build this

type of product.
They had also a prior experience of doing this type of
projects, so we can say that alignment of the project with the
parent organization was very much feasible & realistic as per the
objectives, vision & mission of the company.
