Energy Sector in India

and It’s International

Aspects
QUESTION?
What do we need to move?

ENERGY
Where do we get this energy from?

FOOD
In fact …..
NOTHING
would
happen
without

ENERGY
Sources
of
energy
Non-Renewable Energy
Sources
• Conventional
• Petroleum
• Natural Gas
• Coal
• Nuclear
• Unconventional (examples)
• Oil Shale
• Natural gas hydrates in marine sediment
Renewable Energy Sources

• Solar photovoltaic
• Solar thermal power
• Passive solar air and water
heating
• Wind
Renewable Energy Sources

• Hydropower
• Biomass
• Ocean energy
• Geothermal
• Waste to Energy
World Total Primary Energy Supply
in 1998 (9491 Mt)
World Energy Consumption
World Energy Consumption
Where we stand
•Sixth largest energy
consumer in the
world.
•Accounting for 3.4%
of global energy
consumption.
• India, 5th largest wind energy
producer

• Behind only Germany (the

highest producer in the world),
Spain, the United States and
Denmark.
• India now ranks third amongst the
coal producing countries in the
world.

• It accounts for 55% of the

country’s total energy supplies.
Other Assets
• India has a vast hydro potential
of 150,000 MW out of which only
17% has been tapped so far.

• POPULATION IS EXPLODING.
India's rapid
industrialization and
increased role in the
global economy
continues to
substantially increase
its demand for energy.
As a result, business
and investment activity
in India's energy sector
is substantially
growing as well.
WHAT WE WILL GET
Recent KPMG report
forecasts that India's energy
sector would require
investments of $120-150
billion over the next five years
India's energy sector is
witnessing a steady increase in
foreign investment and business
arrangements for the import,
licensing and use of energy-
related technologies from US
companies.
There has been a dramatic
increase in the number of US
companies currently either
engaged in, or actively pursuing,
a broad spectrum of business
transactions with Indian
companies in the energy field.
Such business transactions range
from :
1. Simple licensing arrangements
to complex joint R&D,
2. Manufacturing and marketing
agreements for commercializing
end products.
BITTER FACT’S
• More than 70% of It’s primary
energy needs are being met
through imports, mainly in the
form of crude oil and natural
gas.

• Since independence and

electrified more than 500,000
villages.
• It is a matter of concern that
44% of house holds do not have
access to the electricity
(Census 2001) and as many as
80,000 villages are yet to be
electrified.
• The electricity supply is not
even sufficient for those who
have been connected. The
country still encounters peak
and energy shortage of 7.7%
and 12.3% respectively (Up to
Aug ’05).
Due to its high population of
approximately 1.1 billion, the
per-capita consumption is
extremely low.
• The per capita energy
consumption is estimated to be
a very modest 530 Kg of Oil
Equivalent (kgoe) while the
world average is approximately
1800 kgoe
However,

the proportion of natural

gas is approximately
one-third that of the
world average, once
again indicating the
potential for rapid
growth.
