GREEN MEANS
GO!!!
SUSTAINABLITY

A BUZZ WORD
SUSTAINABILITY
The UK government’s 1998 policy statement (DETR, 1998) defines
sustainability as:
• Social progress which recognizes the needs of everyone
• Effective protection of the environment, limiting global effects
• Efficient use of natural resources
• Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and
employment.

Sustainability:
 can also be defined by the ‘good’ things that must grow in the future
(like jobs, productivity, wages, profits, capital and savings, information,
knowledge and education) and the ‘bad’ things that must not grow in
the future (like pollution, waste, poverty, energy and material use per
unit of output) (Ryan, 2003).
…SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is one of the strategic goals of the
City’s recently approved Transportation
Master Plan,
Plan The Way We Move.

Balance
• environmental quality
• social justice and equity
• economic prosperity
…SUSTAINABILITY
Transportation decisions reflect an integrated approach to
environmental,
environmental financial,
financial and social impacts thereby
creating sustainable, livable communities that minimize
the need for new infrastructure and increase residents’
quality of life
.
This goal recognizes that:
“The most effective way to minimize the transportation
system’s environmental impact is to reduce the scope
and scale of that system so it is easier to make
sustainable transportation mode choices.”
Sustainable transport

Sustainable transport (or green transport) refers to

any means of transport with low impact on the
environment, and includes walking and cycling,
transit oriented development, green vehicles, Car
Sharing, and building or protecting urban transport
systems that are fuel-efficient, space-saving and
promote healthy lifestyles.
…Sustainable transport

 promotes human health

 provides opportunities for social interaction
 enriches urban experiences
 provides mobility and accessibility
 offers transportation choices
SUSTAINABLE
TRANSPORTATION
SYSTEM
A sustainable transportation system is one
that:
• allows the basic access needs of individuals and societies to
be met safely and in a manner consistent with human and
ecosystem health, and with equity within and between
generations.

• is affordable, operates efficiently, offers choice of transport

mode, and supports a vibrant economy.

• limits emissions and waste within the planet’s ability to

absorb them, minimize consumption of non-renewable
resources, limits consumption of renewable resources to
the sustainable yield level, reuses and recycles its
components, and minimizes the use of land and the
production of noise.
• While a city may be defined by its population, all it takes is a
quick look at a map to recognize that its transportation system
is a fundamental organizing principle behind its urban form
.
• Transport is essential to the functioning of a city in all
aspects of daily life and commerce. As a result, the planning,
design, construction, and operation of the transportation
system have a broad range of impacts on environmental
sustainability, including:

1-Air,water and soil quality,

2-Habit and biodiversity,
3-claimate change,
4-Arable land.
Environmentally sustainable transport
 The environmental impacts of transport can be reduced by
improving the walking and cycling environment in cities, and
by enhancing the role of public transport, especially electric
rail.

• Green vehicles
• Electric vehicle
• Hybrid vehicles
Sustainable Transport
Options
1-Use smaller vehicle for travel

2-Optimize vehicle use

3-Use electric drive vehicles
1.Battery-powered EVs, have much lower greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Fuel-cell vehicles powered by hydrogen are even better and are increasingly
becoming available.
3. The only emission from these vehicles is water!

4-Consider alternate fuels

1-Fuels from non-petroleum resources.
2-LPG, CNG, and ethanol (limited use)
3-Natural gas derived fuels, such as
methanol, dimethyl, and ethers (clean
fuels)
4-Electricity (limited use)
5-Cut the size and use of your fleet
• Encouraging use of transit, bicycles, and walking
• enable cut in size of the fleet.
• It is very usual practice in ‘European’ countries

6-Maximum efficiency
Maintaining correct tire pressure, a tuned engine and
regular oil changes can save over a ton of CO2 per
year!
7-Use parking as a lever
Target specific motor vehicle users by varying parking
charges according to time of day

8- Promote telecommunicating & flexible scheduling

 Computers, modems, the Internet, telephones and
fax machines allow employees to work at home.
 Change the work week—to ten hours a day for four
days, for example - reduce commuting.
9-Offer parking cash-out
“Parking Cash-out” is an innovative twist on parking
charges. It offers an employee a choice—keep your free
parking place or give it up for cash.

10-Guarantee a ride
Address this concern by guaranteeing employees a ride
home—by taxi or company car—when needed.
11-Make fares low : keep them low

12- Provide amble funding

 Funding mechanisms have long tilted the playing field toward private
automobiles and away from public transit.

 Local governments should work to get significant portions of revenues

from gas taxes, tolls, motor vehicle fees, and similar sources
permanently earmarked for public transit.
13-Make transit system comprehensive &
convenient

14- Target prime transit users

A transit agency, for instance, can work with schools, colleges, and
universities so that student identification cards can double as
public transit passes.
15-Provide dedicated right-of-way
The sight of a bus sailing along in its own dedicated
travel lane next to several lanes of clogged freeway
traffic is the best possible advertisement for transit.

16-Encourage non-traditional transit

• Vans and mini-buses used for small-scale transit
• routes can feed into regular train, trolley, and bus
• lines to significantly improve convenience and
• reduce transit times.
17-Discourage sprawl

Sprawl means continual expansion of the urban

boundary ever outward to accommodate new
development.
18-Promote planted oriented development

 Maximize the utility of mixed-use developments by

revising your general plan and zoning laws to favor
dense developments near transit corridors and
stations.
 Setting minimum density requirements for project
within a set distance of public transit station.
 Coordinate with transit agencies to ensure that
transit lines serve new housing and commercial
developments.
19-make streets safer for pedestrians

 Confusing lane design

 Bad striping
 Poorly timed

Local government’s traffic department should

analyze available facilities for pedestrian
hazards, and eliminate them.
Overall Global Perspective
Sustainable Transport Option in Middle-East
Case study: IRAN
The rapid increase in road congestion has led to the
serious consideration of PT options by all the Gulf
States.

Country: Islamic Republic of Iran

Location: Tehran
-The Tehran Metro
is a rapid transit system serving Tehran. The system consists of 4 operational
lines, with construction having begun on a further two lines in 2007.
-The Tehran Metro carries an average of 1.26 million passengers a day ,and
447 million passengers per year in 2009-2010.

Overall Global Perspective…
Sustainable Transport Option in Thailand
Case Study: Bangkok

The key Options are:

1. Private sector participation in Urban Transport
infrastructure provision
2. Preparation of Mobility Management Plans
3. Introduction of Mass Transit system
4. Preserving and expanding the role of NMT
5. Intelligent Transportation System
