KOPANONG HOTEL, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH
AFRICA
“365 DAYS OF LOCAL ACTION TO END GENDER
VIOLENCE: HALVE GENDER VIOLENCE BY 2015”

RESPONSE
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THIS
PROBLEM?
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• This project has been realized with the

assistance from Genderlinks through
workshops at the town.
• Although we had marches in the township
aimed at reducing violence, we did not
have the broader inclusion of partners, like
Town Council, the youth, Church,
Regional Council and traditional leaders.

• RESPONSE

• A workshop organized by GL during
16days GBV has helped the town’s
community to come up with a strategy
to combat GBV an other related issues
pertaining to violence.
• Genderlinks also held meetings with town
Council and management, for stage 1 &
2 situation analyses.

RESPONSE
• Discussions were held with Community, in which
we all strategized the road ahead for 16 days
GBV Campaigns.
• The groups decided to visit spot where a
pregnant woman and four children were
killed in cold blood.
• This was a way to show and express solidarity
with the survivors and promised them that the
community will do all in its power for the
culprits to get no bail, which was refused by
the presiding Judge and stiffer sentences to
be imposed on him.

RESPONSE

What is the context in which this project is

operating?
• What is the context in which this project is
operating?
• The people of the support group and community
did realize that murder and rape cases at
Outjo are very high.
• That’s why we have decided to stand up in the
community and make contact with the victims
of GBV. That is how we saw how high GBV is
in Outjo.

RESPONSE
IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• It is important because we have to come up

with strategies to fight GBV in our
communities, Society, Church, streets and
homes violence. GBV has become a major
national developmental issue for Namibia,
and curbing violence in those areas will
help the country, to plan for strategies to
combat violence.

RESPONSE
How big a problem is Gender violence of abuse

in your country/area?
• Like I see Gender Base Violence is growing
every day. We have lots of squatters here,
• These spots are breading spot for violence. So
the other problem that is increasing the GBV
level is the people that are selling drugs and
alcohol.
• And we have realize that it is very dangerous for
an alcoholic to use drugs and alcohol at the
same time, because after all the person does
not know what he is doing.

• NAME OF GOOD PRACTISE

How big a problem is Gender violence of abuse

in your country/area?
• Like in the case of the house that was
burned down in Outjo where five people
were killed including a nine month
pregnant woman.
• You can see that it is very difficult, the
person did not have any control over
himself, because of the drugs and
alcohol that he used before committing
the crimes. Still to be proven in Court of
law his verdict.

How big a problem is Gender violence of abuse

in your country/area?
• So it’s because of the miss using of drugs
and alcohol that the level of GBV is
increasing on a daily bases in Outjo.
And Outjo is a very small place.

NAME OF GOOD PRACTISE

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING
THI S PROBLEM?
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• Now that we have GL GBV Committee, it is

easier to channel all our resources to a
centre place.
• This committee has also assisted GL with its
activities at the town, like workshops and
the organization of the 16days GBV
events.

NAME OF GOOD PRACTISE

PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• The key targets are women and children as

they are the victims of violence at my
town.
• The stakeholders that are involved are
women’s NGOs, Youth, and the Town

• Equality is a great concern at the town.
When GL introduced the SADC Protocol at
the time, only few were invited to the

to GBV at the town, but much still need to
be done to realized the goals set to
eradicated GBV by 2015
• The Council has not put some finding for

• The march attended by hundreds of people.
Councils led by the Mayor, community
activists, experts in gender issues, youth,
learners and those who support the ideals of
eliminating violence at the town.

RESPONSE
EFFECTIVENESS
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• Yes. It is active, especially when we visited a

spot, where four children and a pregnant
woman was brutally killed on 4th May 2009
at the town. People flocked to the spot in
big number on 10th December 2010 to pay
homage to many of those killed and raped
at the town.

RESPONSE
SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• Yes project is sustainable, as in kind many

women volunteer to preach about
violence, women and young girls. It can be
replicated in rural areas as GL has
decentralized 16days and other
programmes in other parts of the country.

RESPONSE
LESSONS LEARNED
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY

• Lessons are great. That if there is a way

there is always a will to raise awareness
on violence against women and children.
That community should not wait for the
16days GBV campaign to raise their dis-
satisfaction on issues that affects them.
• That community, stake holders and
Councilors can work together in combating
GBV in many ways.
