WRITING THE

CHEMICAL FORMULA
OF A GIVEN
COMPOUND
INTRODUCTION
By combining elements, compounds
are formed. A compound is a
pure substance of definite composition
that can be joined to form another
substance. A compound is different from
an element although they are related with
each other. An element is another pure
substance that cannot be decomposed into
simpler substances. But what is the
relationship between the two?
Well, you cannot form a compound without
an element because it makes up a compound.
And it is important for you to be familiar
with the elements because it will enable you
to understand the main topic easily.
Elements are divided into three classes:
metals, non metals and metalloids. Metals
are elements that tend to lose their valence
electrons. Valence electron is the
electron in the outer shell of an atom. A
non metal is an element that tends to gain
electrons to complete its outer electron
shell while a
metalloids are elements that may possess
the properties of a metal and a non metal.
On the other hand, while there is a
reaction taking place between two
elements, there is losing and gaining of
one or more electrons from an atom or a
molecule and this charged particle is
known as ion. Ion is classified into
monoatomic or polyatomic. Knowing about
ion is also an important factor in writing
the chemical formula of a compound.
Now that you have
learned about elements,
compounds and ion, you will
now be able to write the
chemical formula of a
compound with ease.
OBJECTIVES
 To give the rules in writing the
chemical formula of a given
compound.
 To define the unfamiliar terms
related to the topic.
 To illustrate/show the steps in
writing the chemical formula of
compounds.
DEFINITION OF
TERMS
 ELEMENT- a pure substance that can be
decomposed into simpler substance
 COMPOUND- a pure substance of
definite composition that can be joined to
form another substance
 BINARY COMPOUND- a compound
containing two elements per molecule
 TERNARY COMPOUND- a compound
containing three or more elements per
molecule
 CHEMICAL FORMULA-  a way of
expressing information about
the atoms that constitute a
particular chemical compound
 ION- charged particle resulting from the
loss or gain of one or more electrons from
an atom or molecule
 MONOATOMIC ION- ions which are
formed from a single atom
 POLYATOMIC ION- ions containing more
than one atom
 PURE SUBSTANCE- A sample of matter,
either an element or a compound, that
consists of only one component with
definite physical and chemical properties
and a definite composition
 METALS- are elements that tend to lose
their valence electrons
 NONMETALS-elements that tend to gain
electrons to complete its outer electron
shell
 METALLOID- can be either metal or non
metal
 OXIDATION NO. - a small number
related to the degree of positive or
negative character of an atom in a
molecule or polyatomic ion, or to the
charge in a monoatomic ion
 VALENCE ELECTRON- electron in valence
shell of an atom; determines how an
element reacts
 ELECTRON- a subatomic particle carrying
a negative electric charge
