Protocol 17

Defination
To drop down from a height is
called Fall. It can be accidental
or even intentional.
Risk Factors
 60% of falls occur at home.
 Fall rates are highest children age 0-4 years
and adults age 75 and older.
 At least one-third of all falls among older
people involve environmental hazards in the
home.
 Fall is one of the leading cause of trauma
(serious injury).
Causes
 Accidental
 Dizziness
 Electrocaution/Lightning
 Fainted/Nearly Fainted
 Jumped
Key Questions
 How far did patient fall?
 What caused the fall?
Is there any Serious Bleeding?
 What part of the body is
injured?
When did this happen?
The height of the victim from where he fall is
very impotant to know.

EXTREME FALL:
The patient has fallen from a distance of
30ft/10m or higher.

LONG FALL:
The patient has fallen from a distance of
 Adult/Child> 10-29ft (3-9m)
 Infant > 6-29ft (2-9m)
Un-conscious (Arrest) / Not Alert
Check Breathing
Maintain Airway
Do not move Head / Neck
Dangerous Body Area
 Abdomen
 Amputation (exculding finger/toe)
 Back
 Chest (breathing normally)
 Genitalia
 Head (alert)
 Leg, upper (obvious deformity)
 Neck (breathing normally)
Proximal Body Area
Arm, upper
 Collar (clavicle) bone
 Hip/Pelvis
 Knee
 Leg, lower (tibia)
 Leg, upper (without deformity)
 Shoulder
Distal Body Area
 Ankle
 Elbow
 Finger
 Foot
 Forearm
 Hand
 Toe
 Wrist
Worker are at great risk of fall
Serious Bleeding
Uncontrolled bleeding
(spurting/pouring) from any body
area is Serious Bleeding.
Suffixes
J = Jumper (suicide attempt)

G= On the Ground or Floor


Important Points
 Distance of the fall is very important.
 Not Alert with INEFFECTIVE BREATHING,
the EMD should Protect LIFE over Limb and
open the Airway.
Time is very of fall is very important (more
than 6 hours is Non-Recent)
 Ground level falls caused by
Fainting/Dizziness should be handled on
Protocol 31.
Spinal Injury
If Spinal injury in a breathing patient and PAI’s
are not necessary. EMD should encourage
not to move and stabilise patient’s head and
neck.
 Abnormal breathing
 Diving accident
 Extreme or Long fall
 Facial or Head injury
 Tingling sensation or numbess in Limbs
 Unconsciousness at a Trauma scene
