CHOKING

BY JAWAD AHMED
CHOKING
(STRANGLE, BLOCK THE WIND PIPE)

Choking is the mechanical

obstruction of the flow of
air from the environment
into the lungs. Choking
prevents breathing and can
be partial or complete.
TYPES OF CHOKING:

 PARTIAL CHOKING:

Partial choking allowing some,

although inadequate, flow of air
into the lungs.
PARTIAL AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION:
The signs of partial airway obstruction
include:
The conscious patient will usually make
clutching motions toward the neck.
Forceful coughs.
Wheezing sounds between coughs.
Skin discoloration (cyanosis).
Difficulty speaking normally.
 COMPLETE CHOKING:

Complete choking
results in asphyxia
(suffocation) which
leads to anoxia (lack
or absence of oxygen)
and is potentially
fatal.
COMPLETE AIRWAY
OBSTRUCTION:

The signs of complete airway obstruction

include:
The patient will display the universal distress
signal.
Nor will he or she be able to cough.
The unconscious patient with a complete
airway obstruction exhibits none of the usual
signs of breathing.
CHOKING CAN BE CAUSED BY:
Physical obstruction of the
airway by a foreign body.
Respiratory diseases that
involve obstruction of the
airway.
Compression of the
laryngopharynx, larynx or
trachea in strangulation.
FOREIGN BODY OBJECTS:
Toys, such as:
Jacks, marbles, and marble-
sized balls
Latex balloons, either
uninflated or broken pieces.
Balloons are easily inhaled
into the windpipe.
Those with small detachable
parts, like wheels .
 Household objects, such as:
 Coins
 Adhesive bandages
 Buttons
 Beads and other jewelry
 Thumbtacks and screws
 Paper clips, pen tops, and safety pins
 Clothing price tags
 Small holiday decorations
 Kitchen items, such as:
 Eggshells
 Bottle caps
 Plastic tabs from protective coverings on containers
THINGS WE HAVE TO DO…

Do not slap her/him on back.

Do not give the person anything
to drink because fluids may take
up space needed for the passage
of air.
Encouraging the victim to cough.
TREATEMENT:

Choking can be treated with a number of different procedures, with

both basic techniques available for first aiders and more advanced
techniques available for health professionals.

 CPR (FOR UNCONCIOUS AND NOT ALERT

PATIENTS)
 HEIMLICH MANUVER (FOR CONSIOUS PATIENTS)
CPR HEIMLICH MANUVER
HEIMLICH MANUVER
An emergency technique used to
eject an object, such as food, from a
trachea of an chocking person. The
techniques employs a firm upward
thrust just below the rib cage to force
air from the lungs.
HEIMLICH MANUVER
Dr. Henry Jay Heimlich
(born February 3, 1920), an
American physician, has
received credit as the
inventor of
abdominal thrusts, more
commonly known as the
Heimlich maneuver in 1974.
ADULT/CHILD
Stand behind him/her.
Put your arm around his/her
waist.
Make a fist and grasp it with
your other hand, just above the
belly button.
Be sure you are below the ribs.
In one jerk motion, jerk hard,
up and into the stomach.
Keep doing it until s/he can
breath.
OBESE/VISIBLY PREGNANT
Stand behind him/her.
Wrap your arms around
his/her chest, just under
the armpits.
Make a fist and grasp it
with your other hand right
between the nipples.
INFANT
Lay the baby face up
on the ground.
Place 2 fingers in the
center of the baby’s
chest.
Push up quickly 1 inch
with only your fingers.
Push the chest rapidly
about once per second.
Keep doing it until the
baby can breath or cry.
SOME OTHER PDIS..
Monitor Breathing
Clear Vomit
Clear Object
Extra Reassurance:
Its ok we can do this
together.
You are doing great.
I am here with you.
That’s very good.
INCIDENCE
A US study suggests an incidence of death due
to FBAO (Foreign body airway obstruction) of
0.66 per 100,000 populations.

An Australian study looking at incidence of

foreign body asphyxia admission rate in the
under 15s shows a rate of 15.1 per 100,000 per
annum, peaking in the under ones and then
gradually declining to low levels by 3 years old.
