WHAT IS 3G TECHNOLOGY:-
3G stands for third generation, it is a generic term covering a
range of future wireless network technologies.
3G combines high-speed mobile access with Internet
Protocol (IP) based services.
The first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT
DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA, in May 2001 on a pre-
release of W-CDMA technology. The first commercial launch of
3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on 1 October 2001,
although it was initially somewhat limited in scope.
3G system must allow simultaneous use of speech and data
services, and provide peak data rates of at least 200 kbit/s
according to the IMT-2000 specification.

Cont….

The 3G standard was created by the International

Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is called IMT-2000.
The aim of IMT-2000 is to harmonize worldwide 3G
systems to provide global roaming.
3G is a telecommunications term for the next
generation wireless networks that will have increased
bandwidth and enable new IP based solutions such as:

Interactive games, Downloadable ringers, Screensavers

Device personalization, Still pictures, video imaging,
Richer business applications, Full Internet browsing.
3G networks are characterized by the following:-
Faster: 56kbps-2.4mbps
Integrated: IP based packet data network
Efficient: increased voice and data capacity

Features:-
Data rates:-
ITU has not provided a clear definition of the data rate
users can expect from 3G equipment or providers. Thus
users sold 3G service may not be able to point to a
standard and say that the rates it specifies are not being
met.
Security:-
3G networks offer greater security than their 2G
predecessors. By allowing the UE (User Equipment) to
authenticate the network it is attaching to, the user can
be sure the network is the intended one and not an
impersonator. 3G networks use the KASUMI block crypto
instead of the older A5/1 stream cipher.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The 3G standard was created by the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is called IMT-
2000.The aim of IMT-2000 is to harmonize worldwide 3G
systems to provide global roaming. Different standards
grouped together under the IMT-2000 label.
W-CDMA
CDMA2000
TD-CDMA/TD-SCDMA
DECT
UWC-136
Out of these five standards, only three allow full
network coverage over macro cells, micro cells and pico
cells and can thus be considered as full 3G solutions: W-
CDMA, CDMA2000, and TD-SCDMA.

W-CDMA:-
The 3G standard that has been agreed for Europe and
Japan is known as UMTS. UMTS is an upgrade from GSM
via GPRS or EDGE. UMTS is the European vision of 3G,
and has been sold as the successor to the ultra-
successful GSM. W-CDMA has recently been renamed
3GSM (to avoid confusion with CDMA2000).

TD-CDMA/TD-SCDMA:-
The UMTS standard also contains another radio
transmission standard which is rarely mentioned:TD-
CDMA.TD-CDMA was developed by Siemens. While W-
CDMA is an FDD technology (requiring paired spectrum),
TD-CDMA is a TDD technology and thus can use unpaired
spectrum.TDD is well-suited to the transmission of
internet data.

A picocell is a wireless communication system typically covering a small

area, such as in-building (offices, shopping malls, train stations, etc.), or more
recent ln aircraft.
A microcell is a cell in a mobile phone network served by a low power
cellular base station (tower), covering a limited area such as a mall, a hotel, or
a transportation hub.
A macrocell is a cell in a mobile phone network that provides radio coverage
served by a power cellular base station (tower).
