GUIDELINE

Aim: To provide guidance and support (building
bridge) to the new or less experienced students
(mentee) as the mentee works to develop his or
her adaptation skills to the new environment.
Purpose: The mentor is to provide support in motivating,
counseling, promoting and protecting
the mentee. The Peer Mentoring Program is a
program designed to assist in the social, personal,
and academic acclimatization to Saito College by
pairing /grouping incoming new students with
outstanding senior students who act as mentor all round
the academic year.
Benefits of mentoring for mentees: It provides an
important support mechanism for new and
inexperienced students to address early the initial
concerns as they struggle to adapt to a new
environment . It helps new students to form
relationships within the institution.
Other benefits include:
• Increased self-confidence
• The development of reflective practice (by way of
having a critical friend)
• Access to networking
• A sense of belonging to the institution
• A greater understanding of the organizational culture
of the institution
• Support in specific areas of development and
performance
• Having a confidential listener for issues that arise in
the context of their role
• Provide sense of direction for the future
Benefits for mentors: Mentors are often senior students,
they have the opportunity to invest their experience into
the institution and the new students in a unique way.
Benefits for the mentor from this involvement:
•Recognition of expertise
•Identification of possible areas of self-development
•Satisfaction of supporting a colleague’s development
•Possible organizational recognition and reward/incentive
•Avenue for developing leadership skills
Role of a Mentor
A mentor is:
• A knowledgeable and experienced guide who teaches
(and learns) through a commitment to the mutual growth
of both mentee and mentor.
• A caring, thoughtful, and humane facilitator who
provides access to people, places, experiences, and
resources outside the mentee’s routine environment.
• A role model who exemplifies in word and deed what it
means to be an ethical, responsible, and compassionate
human being.
• A trusted ally, or advocate, who works with (not for) the
mentee and on behalf of the mentee’s best interests and
goals
As a Peer Mentor, your principal objectives should be to:
1. Establish a positive, personal relationship with your
mentee(s).
• Avoid acting as if you were nothing more than a
professional service provider (“I’m here to do a job.
I’m a tutor/peer advisor/student office worker; I’m not
here to be your friend!”). Make a proactive effort to act
as a guide, a “coach,” and an ally and advocate.
• Once a positive, personal relationship is developed, it
is much easier to realize the remaining three goals.
• Trust and respect must be established.
• Regular interaction and consistent support are
important in many mentoring relationships
