Simple sentence
• Subject + verb
– I play football

– My parents will move to a new house or live with my

• Swap with your partner and let your partner
decide what the formula is.

Conjunction - connecting words
• And
– join two or more items in a positive sentence
• I love pizza and pasta

• Or
– join two or more items in a negative sentence
• I don't like hot dogs or hamburgers.
– Used for choices.
• Is this sentence true or false?

Making your sentences flow
• Important for academic writing.
• Rules
– Don't repeat words if possible.
– Only use words that are needed. You can remove
some words.
– Add words that you might need. (i.e. and)
Example 1
• I am a man.
• I am famous.

• I am a man and I am famous.


– Good sentence, but it doesn't flow

• I am a famous man.
– remove "I am" because we don't want to repeat it.
Example 2
• I have white hair.
• I have a long white beard.

• I have white hair and a long white beard.


– We don't remove "white" because it is important
information.
