 What's a Crocodile?
• A crocodile is a large reptile that has been around since the age
of the dinosaurs and they haven't changed that much since
then.
• Crocodiles have the strongest bite force out of any living animal.
• Crocodiles can live up to be 70 years old. There is some
evidence which suggests that one species of crocodile may live
for over 100 years.
• Unlike other reptiles, they have a cerebral cortex, and a four-
chambered heart.
• Crocodiles also have a Gastralium. Gastralium is found in
theropod dinosaurs (Tyrannosaurus rex, Allosaurus, etc)

 Habitats
• Crocodiles live in large body's of water, mainly freshwaters
like rivers and lakes, but some like the saltwater crocodile live
in oceans. There they wait for their prey who stop by to have
a drink. They are found in Eastern India, Southeast Asia,
northern Australia, southern Florida, southern Mexico,
Central America, the Caribbean, northern South America, and
Africa.
What's its diet? And how does it hunt?
• Crocodiles eat almost any other
animals. Crocodiles enjoy eating fish
(including sharks),mammals and even
birds. They sometimes even eat smaller
crocodiles.
• Crocodiles ambush their prey. They
wait until they come close and then
rush out to attack them. They often
wait near a bank of a river and rush out
onto land to eat any land animals that
comes by.
Did you know?:
A 20 foot Nile crocodile attacked a
mother elephant for food. Although
to many, an elephant seems like an
unusual prey for this Nile crocodile,
reptiles will occasionally ambush
and try to take down larger animals

 How well do they swim in water?
• A crocodile’s physical traits allows it
to be a successful swimmers. They
have a streamlined body that enables
them to swim swiftly. Crocodiles also
tuck their feet to their sides while
swimming, which makes them faster
by decreasing water resistance.
 Territory and breeding
• Crocodiles are very territorial animals, attacking other crocodiles. This violent
dance ends when one of the crocodiles retreats and the other king of its territory.

• During the mating season, males attract females by bellowing, slapping their snouts in the
water, blowing water of out their noses, and making a variety of other noises. The larger
males of a population tend to be more successful. Once a female has been attracted, the pair
warble and rub the underside of their jaws together. Breeding territories are usually
established along tidal rivers, creeks and freshwater areas. Males will fight one another for
the female crocodiles. Female crocodiles could lay up to 40 eggs.

• While some people see them as viscous killing machines they are actually very protective of their young.
• When a female crocodile lays eggs the crocodile hides them in the soil and stays nearby to protect them.
• When its time to hatch the baby crocodiles make a hic-up sort of noise telling the mother “its time to for
us to hatch”. The mother digs up the eggs. New study shows that baby crocodiles interact with one
another in their egg shells telling one another when its time to go out into the world.
• Once they hatch, the mother stays to protect them for a while until they are mature to defend them
selves. The mother crocodiles responds to her young when the baby crocodiles call for help. Like a bird, a
mother crocodile is seen feeding her young (seen on the picture in the middle below)
