 Jazz is a musical tradition and style of music that

originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African


American communities in the Southern United States
from a mixture of African and European music
traditions. Jazz is actually a slang term that was used in
the west. From its early development until the present,
jazz has been one of the most popular type of music from
20th to the 21st century in America.
 Louis Armstrong was one of
the most influential artists in
the history of music. Louis
Armstrong was born in New
Orleans, Louisiana, on
August 4, 1901, he began
playing the cornet at the age
of 13. Armstrong perfected
the improvised jazz solo as
we know it
 One of the most significant figures in
music history, Edward Kennedy Duke
Ellington who was born on April 29,
1899, in Washington, D.C. He began
studying the piano at the age of
seven. He started playing jazz as a
teenager, and moved to New York
City to become a bandleader. As a
pianist, composer, and bandleader,
Ellington was one of the creators of
the big band sound, which fueled the
"swing" era. He continued leading
and composing for his jazz orchestra
until his death in 1974.
 John Birks was a trumpeter,
bandleader, and composer John
Birks Dizzy Gillespie was born
on October 21, 1917, in Cheraw,
South Carolina. He got his first
music lesson from his father and
took off from there. He moved to
New York City in 1937 and met
musicians such as Thelonious
Monk and Charlie Parker.
Together they experimented with
jazz and came up with the bebop
sound

due to the fact that the
instrument has
combined melodic and
harmonic features.
 Trumpets are among the oldest musical
instruments,dating back to at least 1500 BCE. They
are constructed of brass tubing bent twice

the 1800s and 1900s. It was a
mix of Christian Gospel lyrics,
with bluegrass, and jazz. This
type of music was first sang by
slaves in order to communicate
with each other. But, as soon as
churches discovered this type of
music, traveling preachers
began to speak about it and
many people, especially African
Americans, took a liking to this
new style of music. It soon
became the most popular music
in the South and its churches.
A very popular song that slaves
sang during the era of Southern
Gospel was, “Wade in the Water”.
This song was sung by slaves to
convey what to do when running
away from their masters. Back
when slaves escaped, they did it
during the night to make it difficult
for their masters to find them.
However, the slave owners would
get their hounds to hunt down and
find the slaves using their scent.
The song, “Wade in the Water”,
was made to tell slaves that,
when they’re attempting to run
away, they should wade in the
wade because dogs can’t track
down scents their scents that
