First began in search for hydrocarbon was publicity in 1968 and first exploration license in 1970 to the Shell company The first 2 wells were drilled in Tonga for hydrocarbon close to oil seeps in a basin defined on the basis of gravity and magnetic data but without onshore seismic control. Both were plugged as dry holes at the depth of 1676m. Not get to basement After 120m depth of Plio-Pleistocene reef limestone penetrated a thick sequence of fine to coarse volcaniclastic interbedded with thin limestone 1976 second phase began with new agreement with an American company WEBB Resources.

3 more wells were drilled without success. 2 of the wells bottom in sills, since dated as Miocene intrusion within Oligocene or late Eocene volcaniclastic. The maximum depth is of drilling was 2364m Currently 3 companies have license for Mineral Exploration
