Attainment of optimum health is the desire of every individual. Health of the people is an Index of the level of development of a country. The achievement of a country in preventing disease and promoting health depends upon the contribution of all members of the health team particularly that of nurses, who spent 24 hours around patient side and form a major group.

With the beginning of the 16th century, women who committed a crime were recruited into NURSING instead of serving jail sentences. From the middle of the 18th century to the 19th century, Social reforms were changing the roles of NURSES and of women in general. It was during this time that Nursing of today started with the beginning of Florence Nightingale. Who is the MOTHER OF MODERN NURSING.

MODERN NURSING in Ethiopia started in the later part of the 19th C by Swedish missionaries who came in Eritrea in 1866. In 1939 Princess Tsehay, the youngest daughter of HailSilase graduated from Ormond Street Hospital from London as FIRST NATIONAL NURSE specialized as a child health nurse. In 1949 the first school of nursing ( the Ethiopian red cross) was opened in the former Haile-Selassie I Hospital ( currently Yekatit 12) only for females. In 1960, the first nursing section was opened at MOH.

Until 2004 all nursing schools in Ethiopia were offering Diploma programs on regular basis. The generic B.Sc nursing was started in A.A Hawassa ,Jima,Gonder, Harmaya. In 2005 MSN was started at A.A university Currently there are a number of government owned, NGO and private school/ colleges of nursing. Most schools are under higher education. Nursing curriculum development and revision has been going on for many years and in different institutions. But changes were not basic; containing irrelevant courses, repetitive contents and fragmented learning that avoids the facilitation and integration of principles from the natural social, public health and medical sciences into nursing practice. There fore categorization and modularization of courses thought to minimize the previously encountered problems in this specific profession.

The major teaching materials used to effect this Modular methods of teaching include:

Text books Lecture notes Modules Dolls Models Chalk board Flip chart Video, Photo Slides, etc Nursing Journals Demonstration equipment

> Recent published Books > Video, Photo Slides, etc > Nursing Journals > Vehicles > Audiovisuals such as LCD, and laptop computers > Lecture rooms > Photocopiers > Duplicating machines > Different medical equipment for nursing demonstration (laboratory).

Evaluation will be in the form of formative and summative assessments. Formative assessment (60%) consists of: >Quiz >Test >Field visit report >Case presentation >Supervision >Assessment of practical skills/re-demonstration >Individual/group assignment and exercise etc. Summative assessment (40%) consists of: >Final written exam >Practical exam >Oral exam (internal) >Research

Consideration taken during categorization and modularization of courses;

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Year of the course given. Semester of the course given. Vertical relation of the course. Horizontal relation of the course. Nature of the course. One Module is given for a maximum of three semester.

By considering the above five points we have: 7= Categories 27= Module for the total of 55= Courses that taken by the student in the four year B.Sc curriculum.
