Canadas Proposed Emission Regulations Proposed Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Regulations on Coal fired Power Plant
2011 2015 New regulations to become law in 2011 and in effect by 2015 and applicable to all coal fired power units 2015 / (360-420 Toones/GWh) By 2015, existing coal-fired units must meet an emission standard on par with the emissions intensity of high-efficiency natural gas generation 360-420 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide (CO2) / per megawatt hours (GWh) CO2 2025 Capture ready required for all new coalfired electricity units and allow for technology development to meet the emission standards until 2025.

SaskPower is leading the development of one of the worlds first and largest integrated clean coal/carbon capture and sequestration demonstrations projects. A unique project that will demonstrate a cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, long-term model for existing coal-fired electricity generation. The project will fully integrate and retrofit a coal-fired generation unit with carbon capture and an enhanced oil recovery operation. / This leading-edge project will determine the technical, economic and environmental performance of clean coal/carbon capture and storage technology.

Knowledge Expected
Will performance match engineering predictions Will integrated operation perform as intended were the risk models actually of value in managing the project, or is this just fodder for the financiers Can some of the opportunities which were bypassed on the Demo be brought into future projects What new opportunities for cost reduction and performance improvements will be uncovered To what extent will society support movement to low carbon future including accepting a cost premium Will new public Issues arise To what extent will new industry grow what regional economic impact will be seen
