STRUCTURE OF FLOWERS

POLLEN DEVELOPMENT
‡ In each pollen sac are hundreds of pollen mother cells or microsporocyte ‡ Pollen mother cells divide by meiosis to produce four haploid cells (tetrad) ‡ Each tetrad will develop into a pollen ‡ The nucleus in each cell now divides by mitosis to produce two nuclei: generative nucleus and tube nucleus ‡ Cell in the tetrad develops into a distinctive shape and forms a thick resistant wall. ‡ When pollens are mature, the pollen sacs break open releasing the pollen grains

POLLEN DEVELOPMENT

FORMATION OF FRUITS AND SEEDS

‡ Triploid nucleus form endosperm ‡ In dicot, food and nutrients are stored in the cotyledon ‡ In monocot, they are stored in endosperm ‡ Food is needed for the development of embryo and seed germination ‡ Zygote divides to form two cells ‡ Larger cell develops into suspensor, smaller cell devides into embryo

FORMATION OF FRUIT AND SEEDS

‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ ‡ Embryo= plumule + radicle Integuments become seed coat Ovary becomes fruit Floral parts = leaving scar on the ovary wall Ovary wall develops into the outermost skin and fleshy layer of the fruit
