sustainable City Awards 2008.

Reduced carbon emissions by 20% during 2006 due to rollout of new

thin client infrastructure.

Utilization is the key
 During 2006 we rolled out new infrastructure to
reduce operating costs, secure our corporate data
and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time.
 The new infrastructure consisted of 64 bit Citrix
Presentation Server/Zen App using HP AMD Dual
Processer/Dual Core blades with x64 Opetron
processors with PowerNow! technology.
 Each 64bit server supports a maximum of 100
users ensuring maximum utilisation.
 Our infrastructure supports offices globally
allowing “follow the sun” in opposite time zones
such as Australia.
 We deployed 18 Virtual Windows 2003 Servers
using VMWare 3.0 to run our Citrix Infrastructure.
 On average we run 25 guests per VMWARE host
4
and
virtualized over 100 servers in total. The majority

green
 We have deployed over 5,000 Wyse V30
Thin Client Win terminals which use 14.1
watts up to 10 hours per business day
compared to the 100-185 Watts used by
H.P PCs they replaced which were left on
24 x 7!

 The Thin Client devices are planned to last

twice as long. (eight years compared to
four for a P.C)

 Replacing laptop fleet with Wyse X90

mobile thin clients which consume 20 5

It’s not just about CO2

 Less raw materials and CO2 emissions in

the production of Thin Clients when
compared with PC’s.

 Less weight and smaller packaging

reducing transport emissions.

 Removal of Manuals and non essential

items

 Packaging 99% recyclable.

 Reduced no. of transportation hops to end

Centralized Storage
Legacy Storage pre 2006 over 300 locations

300 x Remote H.P Servers with dual SCSI 18Gb hard

200 x Legacy Data Centre Servers with an average
of 5 x
RAID5 hard disks in an external array.

Total legacy disks spinning 24 x 7 = 1,600

Products

 Wyse V30 WinTerms CE.NET

 Wyse V90 WinTerms Embedded XP

 Wyse X90 Thin Laptops Embedded XP

 Netapp FAS3050 Clustered Filers

 Microsoft Windows 2003 Server x64

 VMware Server ESX 3.0

The Green Data Centre

 Increased temperature from 18C to 24C

 Turned off air conditioning humidifiers

 Installed “Free Cooling” Air Conditioning

 Cold & Hot Isles, Effective use of air flow

 Wind Turbines going through planning

9
The Savings

 Significant reduction in the powering and cooling due to the

reduction of 150 less servers and increasing temperature in
our data centres, eliminating the need for additional planned
upgrades of air conditioning, power distrubution, un-
interupted power supply and generator backup.

 No need to invest in local infrastructure in each country we

operate in. All applications and services are hosted from the
UK in a “follow the sun” approach.

 The reduction of over 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per

annum through reduction of 450 servers and 5,100 PC’s all
of which were powered 24x7. This equates to approx
5,500,000 kilowatt hours saved per annum and saving over
£100,000 which equates to 26%
of financial saving of our annual utility bills. 10
