In this book, we will learn how to count while we play darts.

Darts is a sport that is all about numbers. You win if you get exactly the right number of points before your opponent does.

The more you know about numbers, the better you will be at playing darts!

So lets begin

Here is something that looks like a dartboard, but is slightly different.

The numbers around the outside are not in the order they are in on a dartboard.

seven They are in their eight correct order here. The smallest number nine 9 is at the top. The ten 10 largest is at the bottom. On a dartboard, they are all jumbled around with the largest next to the smallest!

Starting with one and ending with twenty, try to hit each numbers segment in turn. If you dont hit the number first time, try again until you do! Say the numbers you hit out loud, then write them on the chalkboard shown.

This time, try it backwards! Start with twenty and end with one. If you dont hit a number first time, try again until you do. As you play, say each number you hit out loud, as well as the number before it and the number after it, and write them all on the chalkboard shown.

Find an opponent! Lets play Around the Clock Singles!

Again, you must hit each of the numbers in turn, starting with one and ending with twenty. But this time you have to do it before your opponent does! Decide who will throw first, then take it in turns to throw a dart. As before, if you dont hit the right number, try again on your next turn. You win if you get to twenty first!

Now you can count up to twenty. But the numbers dont stop there. In fact, they go on forever! Before we see how to write and say the rest, lets see what we can do with numbersother than win at darts, of course! Meet Mohammed and Chloe. They both collect darts with coloured flights. Here are their collections.

One day, Mohammed says to Chloe: I have more darts than you!

Their friend Eloise disagrees. She says to Mohammed:

You dont have more darts than Chloe. She has more than you.

Chloe isnt convinced that either Eloise or Mohammed is right. She thinks:

Mohammed doesnt have more darts than I have and I dont have more darts than he has. We have the same number of darts.

Who is right? Is it Chloe, Eloise, or Mohammed?

To find out who is right, first we count Chloes darts and then we count Mohammeds darts.

But what does this mean?

To count Chloes darts, we point to each one in turn and say the numbers that we learned earlier in the order we learned to put them, starting with 1.

When we counted Chloes darts, we got to 5, so Chloe has 5 darts! Thats how counting works! Now we count Mohammeds darts. Just as we did when we counted Chloes darts, write the numbers in order in the blue boxes under the darts, starting with 1. Draw a dart in the bullseye when you do it correctly.

When we counted Chloes darts, we got to 5. When we counted Mohammeds darts, we got to 5. So they both have 5 darts. Chloe was right! They do have the same number of darts! If we had stopped before 5 when we counted Mohammeds darts, he would have had fewer than Chloe. In this case, Eloise would have been right! If we had stopped after 5 when we counted Mohammeds darts, he would have had more than Chloe. In this case, Mohammed would have been right! On the next few pages, we meet lots of other people with darts collections. Count each collection and write how many darts there are in it in the blue box beside it. 31

Now that we know all about counting, lets get back to the dartboard. Lets play A Game of Two Halves! Player 1 takes ten darts and tries to hit the left-hand half of the board. I said earlier that the numbers dont stop at 20. They go on forever. So what comes after 20? Lets find out. First, write down the numbers from 6 to 12.

Compare the two rows of numbers youve written down. Try to see what they have in common. Once youve seen it, guess how we might continue after 20.
