Many students today have difficulty locating other countries on a map and have limited knowledge of the geography of their own country. Our understanding of geography as it relates to us and to the world at large is important for us as we digest daily news briefs on current events. It helps us to put things into perspective.

Curriculum Develops critical Life

From grade 1 on you have learned a subject called social studies, of which geography is a part of. Many of the skills you developed in your studies will be applied in our study of geography. For example:

Map and Globe skills Concept of place (communities) Land use Interpreting data Constructing models

How does this connect to what you have already learned?

4/5/12

The social studies program you learned in grades 1-6 was organized into 2 groups:
Heritage

and Citizenship Relationships

Countries Around the World Early Settlements in Canada Medieval Times Early Civilizations First Nations Peoples and Early Explorers

In theme 2, you will explore how physical features, climate, and vegetation interact to form patterns on the earths surface through: investigating the natural forces that contribute to these patterns (for example, tornadoes,

earthquakes, hurricanes)

exploring the relationship between natural and human systems (for example, how does our
consumption of fast food affect natural areas such as the Amazon rainforest?)

Theme 2: Patterns in Physical Geography 4/5/12

studying and explaining a variety of human responses to the physical environment.

In theme 3, you will explore the ways that people acquire and use natural resources as well as the environmental impact of these actions.

You will discover how factors such as demand and accessibility determine the importance of resources and examine ways in which human activity affects the sustainability of natural resources.

Theme 3: Natural Resources

4/5/12

How to create and use a map (including topographical maps) How to ask questions to better understand an issue. How to gather information. How to communicate the results of an investigation through oral presentation and by using technology such as computer slide shows, videos and websites. How to prepare and present a report. How to create visual displays of data.

Skills You Will Learn

4/5/12

There are many different ways to teach the material we will be covering this year. My approach will involve:
Use

of media

Hands

on experiences and fieldwork (for example, orienteering)

Investigations

and small Strategies for Teaching group assignments

Self-directed
4/5/12 study

Individual

The

nature of geography is interdisciplinary meaning from all disciplines. For example, it encompasses the subject of math in mapping, of science in ecology and weather, of history in past and current events, of art in drawing maps, of language in the obtaining of information.

How Does Geography Connect to Other Subjects?

4/5/12

We will be using a variety of technology this year to help us in our study of geography. This includes use of :

Computers
Organizing data Graphing Publishing reports

Digital Media
GIS Camera, Video Storing and transferring information

Internet
Mapping programs Information about current events

Geography and Technology

Looking Ahead to Grade 8 and Beyond 4/5/12

In Grades 11 and 12 you will have many different options to study the subject of geography. The courses offered in these grades will expand your knowledge of world geography. A link to the Ontario curriculum will show you some of the options available to you as well as the prerequisite courses you will need to take to further your studies in high school geography.
