Background of the Study

WHAT IS PHOTOSYNTHESIS?

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight trapped in the chloroplasts to produce organic compounds (carbodyrate) from carbon dioxide and water. Oxygen is released as a by-product. 6CO2 + 6H2O

The Role of Chlorophyll

Sketch of Graptophyllum pictum

to show green areas which contain chlorophyll, and white areas.

Leaves were boiled for 10 minutes

Leaves were immersed to 95% ethyl alcohol; pigments were then extracted; Bleached leaf was tested for starch with IKI soln.

The Role of Chlorophyll

RESULT

Discussion: Role of Chlorophyll

Green areas turned black. No change was observed in the white areas Green areas photosynthetic White areas non-photosynthetic Black color indicates starch content.

The Role of Light

Plant was placed in the dark for 48 hours and was wrapped with black paper on selected portions.

Plant was then exposed to light for five hours with the black paper still intact.

Leaf was tested for starch by boiling, immersing to alcohol, and adding IKI solution to the leaf.

The Role of Light

RESULT

Discussion: Role of Light

Uncovered areas turned black after the starch test. Black color indicates starch content. Uncovered areas contained starch

The Role of Carbon Dioxide

3 Test tubes, A, B and C, were filled with boiled then cooled water. A and B had inverted Hydrilla sprigs; C was the control.

NaHCO3 was added to B and C.

Phenol red was then added to three test tubes, after getting rid of the Hydrilla sprigs. Observations were made.

The Role of Carbon Dioxide

RESULTS

Discussion: Role of Carbon Dioxide

A lacked NaHCO3 A and B had Hydrilla sprigs

No bubble formation in test tube A

No NaHCO3 (CO2 contributor) present

Bubble formation occured in test tube B

Note: NaHCO3 contains Carbon Dioxide Photosynthesis occurred in B Test tube C has NaHCO3 and water

The Role of Carbon Dioxide

RESULTS

Discussion: Role of Carbon Dioxide

TAKE NOTE: Phenol red is an indicator of pH and CO2concentration. Turns yellow under acidic conditions (pH<7) Turns pink under basic or alkaline conditions (pH>7) Turns orange under neutral conditions. (pH 7)

NaHCO3 is a base.
Once added in water, pH will increase forming a basic solution.

B & C turned pink (basic) due to NaHCO3 A turned yellow-orange then became orange (neutral)

Conclusion
Chlorophyll is needed for the plant to produce starch/carbohydrates. Chloroplasts of plants are very much seen for these plastids absorb all light except green, which is the one being reflected.

Only those with chlorophyll can undergo photosynthesis

Light is needed in photosynthesis to obtain starch. No light, no photosynthesis = no starch Less light, less photosynthesis = less starch

More light, high photosynthetic rate = more starch!

Presence of carbon dioxide contributes greatly to photosynthesis. Amount of CO2 is directly proportional to photosynthetic rate.

More CO2 = higher rate of photosynthesis!

Chloroplasts, light, and carbon dioxide have specific essentialities that work interdependently for the success of the process of photosynthesis.
