Software a type of programmes or lists of instruction which are needed to enable the computer system to carry out the necessary processing.

Software Package is a set of software written for performing one or more than one well defined tasks

There are two types software:


1. System software- this is a set of programmes needed for operation of the computer.

2.

Application Software- programs developed to perform the tasks specific to the individual user or an institution.

Software for LIS may be grouped as under:


Library Operations- Acquisition, cataloguing, serials control. Management Support Accounting, Budget control, Library Statistics. Information Services-Information search, production of CAS, SDI, indexes, bibliographies, thesaurus construction and its maintenance.
