Poetry?
Poetry is the most distilled way for writers to express their experiences in words. It is musical language and is meant to be read aloud. A poem can be larger than the sum of its parts.

Structure is how the poem is organized. Poems are organized in: stanzas similar to paragraphs lines rows of words (not necessarily sentences)

Use of Language
Imagery words that appeal to the five senses and paint a picture for the reader. Figurative language words used differently from their ordinary, literal meaning. Figures of speech simile, metaphor, hyperbole

Use of Sound
Rhythm pattern of stressed ()and unstressed ()syllables in a line. Meter the regular pattern of rhythm in a poem. Foot one stressed and one or more unstressed syllables that make up the meter of a poem.

Rhyme the repetition of the same stressed vowel sounds and any following sounds in two or more words. Internal Rhyme words on the same line of poetry rhyme. End rhyme words at the end of lines in a poem rhyme.

Rhythm pattern of sound created by the syllables in a line of poetry. It can be regular or irregular. Scansion analyzing the meter in a line of poetry. Breaking the line into feet or rhythmic units.

Slant Rhyme the sounds of words are similar but not identical. They are close or can be forced to rhyme depending on how you say the words.

Rhyme Scheme The pattern of end rhyme in a poem. Each line is given a letter of the alphabet to show which lines rhyme together. Some common schemes are: a,b,a,b a,a,b,b a,b,b,a (You keep the lettering going through the whole poem.)

1. How many lines? Stanzas? 2. Mark the scansion of one line. 3. Letter the rhyme scheme down the end of each line. 4. Underline any internal rhyme.
