    Rickettsia is a genus of bacteria that can cause rickettsial diseases in humans. Rickettsia infect endothelial cells and their life cycle involves transmission between hosts. Common symptoms of rickettsial infections include headache, malaise, fever and rash. As the disease progresses, patients may experience confusion, weakness, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea and low blood pressure. Without treatment, rickettsial diseases can be fatal. Tetracycline and chloramphenicol are used to treat rickettsial infections.

    cause rickets.

    living cells.

    • The majority of Rickettsia bacteria are susceptible


    to antibiotics of the tetracycline group

    • Because the rash often does not appear for several


    days, early rickettsial infection is often mistaken for
    a common viral infection, such as influenza.
