Introduction to DAMA
What is DAMA ?
DAMA : Demand Assign Multiple Access Technique for sharing and accessing communication channels. The transponder BW is shared by multiple users on Demand Assign basis. Hub for resource allocation and bare minimum house keeping functions

Introduction to DAMA
Advantages of DAMA.
Transponder BW is precious resource & needs to be effectively utilized. DAMA access technique makes the best possible use of this resource by reusing & Sharing a common pool of BW DAMA gives full mesh connectivity The communication is on a single satellite HOP thus making it ideal for Voice communication

Introduction to DAMA
Advantages of DAMA.

DAMA data channels are protocol transparent meaning they do not add any overheads thus giving a very high through put . DAMA is also best suited for applications that require High Bandwidth for a finite time e.g. Video conferencing.

How DAMA works ?

A common frequency pool is assigned to a group of users . Control channels in the HUB are used to process call requests & call teardown messages from the users NMS allocates & releases frequencies & Bandwidth to user on demand basis NMS controls & monitors the remote site

Skylink DAMA system architecture
The basic system architecture consists of Hub Skylink 1+1 redundant DAMA NMS Administration & control terminal Master signaling & control channel units Remotes Skylink 8000 remote chassis

Skylink Hub Architecture

Three basic components of HUB : NMS AMT : Network management Server : Administration & Maintenance terminal

BASEBAND : Consisting of MSCU / Control cards & chassis

Skylink Hub Architecture NMS

Skylink Hub Architecture NMS Function

TheNMSperformsthefollowingfunctions: CallProcessing Administration IntegratedSystemwideMonitoringandControl Maintenance.

Skylink Hub Architecture NMS Function

Call Processing NMS does the following functions for processing calls Maintains & allocates the BW pool & frequencies from a master database. Maintains database of traffic statistics e.g. How many call attempts were made ,The peak traffic time etc Maintains database of call records in form of CDR files

Skylink Hub Architecture NMS Function

Administration NMS does the following Administrative functions Maintains a database of all remote sites configuration Maintains a database of telephone numbers of each device In the network Maintains Routing tables for routing calls in the network Implements different levels of security access by means of passwords

Skylink Hub Architecture NMS Function

Monitoring & control NMS polls each defined device in its database for status & health NMS shows the status of each site & device e.g. whether the device is Faulty or working, whether the device/site is on call or idle . NMS also shows the status of individual links on the network e.g. the link Eb/No values, the link data rate ,modulation etc Auxiliary devices which are not a part of skylink network can also be controlled & monitored e.g. Power amplifiers & antenna controllers.

Skylink Hub Architecture NMS Function

Maintenance NMS has the capability to test each device in the Network & report its status automatically. NMS also reports the status of each link & its performance .

Types of control channels There are three types of control channels OUTLINK/outbound ALOHA / INBOUND M&C

Skylink Hub Architecture Hub Baseband

Outlink function Its a 16 k BPSK control channel which is transmitted to all the Remote sites. The network server communicates with the remote sites The administrative and control information from the server is sent via the outlink Frequency correction is also done by the outlink control channel.

Skylink Hub Architecture Hub Baseband

Aloha /inbound function The remote sites transmit 16k BPSK Aloha bursts to the HUB . Aloha bursts contain the call setup request /call termination request from the remote sites. The return link MSCU passes these call requests to the Network server . There can be a maximum of 5 return link MSCU per satellite depending On the traffic requirement.

Skylink Hub Architecture Hub Baseband

M&C control channel

The remote sites transmit 16k M&C Aloha bursts to the HUB when Hub Requests for status/health check of remote site via the OUTLINK. M&C bursts contain the status & health of the remote sites. There can be a maximum of 1 M&C MSCU per satellite .

Channel units Four CU types The Series 8000 CU will be offered in four hardware configurations: Voice Channel Unit (VCU) High speed Channel Unit (HSCU) All channel units are hot swappable

Skylink Remote Architecture Remote Hardware

Voice Channel Unit (VCU) It supports both voice & data. Voice rate supported are 8k G729 16K G728 32K ADPCM 64K PCM Data rates from 8k to 160 k synchronous & asynchronous In steps of 1 bps up115.2 kbps Supports both QPSK & Modulation

Skylink Remote Architecture Remote Hardware

High speed Channel Units It supports only data. Data rates from 32k to 2048 k synchronous in steps of n*32k Supports both QPSK & ,7/8 Modulation It also supports Reed Solomon Coding It supports asymmetric data rates

Skylink Remote Architecture Remote Hardware

Channel units software There are 4 important basic files for all CUS IMP:IMP Controller Binary file, Integrated Multi-Protocol Processor; program that operates all functions of a channel unit. CPL:CPL State Machine Binary file, POTS; controls the call setup by defining what type of circuit will be used. MODEM: Digital MODEM Binary file which contains the executable programs to run the various DSP chips; these executable programs are loaded into the modem at the start and end of every phone call. CODEC:Voice CODEC Binary file which contains the program responsible for the telephone interface circuitry and voice compression

Telephony FEAUTERS Handset initiated data call
It is possible to make synchronous DAMA data calls from the remote sites using Telephone . This eliminates the need for HUB operator to assign a DAMA data call between two remotes. The user dials a string of numbers from his handset connected to VCU card .

The string of Numbers are *03(source data card phone number)#(destination data card phone number ) #
After dialing the string the user will hear 3 beeps which are acknowledgment that the call has been accepted by the NMS.He hangs up the phone. The NMS makes a DAMA data call between two sites
