Introduction to DAMA
What is DAMA ?
DAMA : Demand Assign Multiple Access Technique for sharing and accessing communication channels. The transponder BW is shared by multiple users on Demand Assign basis. Hub for resource allocation and bare minimum house keeping functions
Introduction to DAMA
Advantages of DAMA.
Transponder BW is precious resource & needs to be effectively utilized. DAMA access technique makes the best possible use of this resource by reusing & Sharing a common pool of BW DAMA gives full mesh connectivity The communication is on a single satellite HOP thus making it ideal for Voice communication
Introduction to DAMA
Advantages of DAMA.
DAMA data channels are protocol transparent meaning they do not add any overheads thus giving a very high through put . DAMA is also best suited for applications that require High Bandwidth for a finite time e.g. Video conferencing.

Skylink DAMA system architecture
The basic system architecture consists of Hub Skylink 1+1 redundant DAMA NMS Administration & control terminal Master signaling & control channel units Remotes Skylink 8000 remote chassis
The remote sites transmit 16k M&C Aloha bursts to the HUB when Hub Requests for status/health check of remote site via the OUTLINK. M&C bursts contain the status & health of the remote sites. There can be a maximum of 1 M&C MSCU per satellite .

Telephony FEAUTERS Handset initiated data call
It is possible to make synchronous DAMA data calls from the remote sites using Telephone . This eliminates the need for HUB operator to assign a DAMA data call between two remotes. The user dials a string of numbers from his handset connected to VCU card .
The string of Numbers are *03(source data card phone number)#(destination data card phone number ) #
After dialing the string the user will hear 3 beeps which are acknowledgment that the call has been accepted by the NMS.He hangs up the phone. The NMS makes a DAMA data call between two sites

Telephony FEAUTERS VOXING VOXING : voice activated carrier Used for conserving the transponder power.
The voice carrier will get activated only when someone speaks otherwise There will be no carrier transmitted. To get good audio quality with VOXING min Voice rate should be 32kbps.
Skylink Features
Telephony FEAUTERS Fax data relay The VCU card has inbuilt Fax data relay which supports fax upto 9.6kbps For fax rates of 14.4kbps FDR boards have to be purchased.
V25 Bis
V.25bis = ITU standard for circuit switched data call setup on-demand, mesh connectivity between any location The router serial port is configured for dial up mode When there is interesting traffic the router dials a number

Other useful FEAUTERS Data abort voice/Voice abort data in VCU You can define precedence of traffic on VCU. If Voice abort data is set & VCU is busy in data call ,the VCU Will drop the data call as soon as handset is lifted. If data abort voice is set , the data call on CU will drop the voice channel
