USB SuperSpeed

Understanding USB 3.0

Presented By: Rep Name

What is USB 3.0?

Known as USB SuperSpeed

Compared to USB 2.0 known as High Speed

New specification for USB An improvement over the existing USB 2.0 specification Surpasses existing USB, eSATA and IEEE-1394 in speed

Why USB 3.0?

As mass storage drives increase in size, greater amounts of data needs to be transferred Power demands from devices has exceeded the limits USB 2.0 Other connectivity options such as eSATA and IEEE-1394 offered throughput that USB 2.0 could not compete against

Performance Comparison
USB 2.0

USB 3.0

480Mbps transfer 60mbps throughput Half duplex communication 100mA of power for unconfigured devices 500mA of power for configured devices Powering standby regulated by host

4.8Gbps transfer 600mbps throughput Full duplex communication 150mA of power for unconfigured devices 900-1000mA of power for configured devices Power standby regulated by both host and device

Things you should know

4.8Gbps is not the real world speed of file transfer.

Overhead from protocol, hardware limitations, and chipset limitations prevent file transfer at 4.8 Gbps Throughput is the real world speed ~ 600Mbps

USB 3.0 products will not be at full throughput ability in the beginning

Hardware and chip sets for SuperSpeed has not reach full potential yet

SuperSpeed (3.0) cables will not work with High Speed (2.0) devices

New connectors are too large to fit High Speed cables will work on SuperSpeed devices

Applications

Fast connection between a computer and external hard drive Fast connection with USB flash drives

Future Applications

HD Video transfer for video editing and blu-ray or authoring High resolution photo transfers for editing and storage
