CHAPTER 6 AIR PRESSURE

FACTORS AFFECTING AIR PRESSURE

AIM To determine the factors that influence air pressure MATERIALS Balloon, rubber band, dented ping-pong ball, hot water APPARATUS Glass PROCEDURE 1 Blow up a balloon and tie its mouth tightly with a rubber band. 2 Press hard on the balloon as shown in Diagram (a). Record if you can feel the pressure inside the balloon. 3 Put a dented ping-pong ball into hot water as shown in Diagram (b). Record your observation. Activity Observation 1 Balloon is pressed. Pressure inside the balloon is felt . 2 Dented ping-pong ball is put into hot water The ping-pong ball becomes spherical again

ANALYSIS 1 What happens to the volume of air in the balloon when it is pressed? Decreases 2 How is the air pressure influenced by the volume of air? The smaller the volume of air, the higher the air pressure. 3 What happens to the air particles in the ping-pong ball when it is heated? The air particles move faster and collide more frequently with the walls of the ping-pong ball. 4 What is the effect of heat on the air pressure in the pingpong ball? The air pressure in the ping-pong ball increases when the ball is heated .

CONCLUSION Air pressure is influenced by the volume and temperature of gas.

Activity 6.3 DISCUSSION - Air pressure

Study the laboratory activity below and draw the expected observation in the box provided. Then, fill in the blanks with the suitable words. Higher Compresses Reduced Pressure

The air pressure inside the can is reduced . The higher air pressure outside the can compresses the can. This activity shows that air exerts pressure .

Appliances that use the principle of air pressure Drinking straw

Syringe

Siphon

4.The liquid is broken into small droplets by the air that comes out of the cylinder

Write the words high pressure or low pressure in the suitable places based on the action of air pressure ( )

Exercises
6.1 Understanding air pressure 1 Air has particles that are continually moving and colliding with things on Earth. This produces (air pressure) 2 Draw the direction of the air pressure acting on the thick cardboard.

3 State two factors that affect air pressure. (Temperature and volume of air)

4 State the relationship between the number of gas particles and air pressure.
(As the number of gas

particles increases, the air pressure also increases)

5 State the relationship between the volume of a container filled with gas particles and air pressure inside the container. (As the volume of the container decreases, the air pressure increases)

6 State the relationship between temperature and air pressure. (As the temperature increases, the air
