Internet Searching Tools

Directories Search Engines

Used when we do Used when we want to go
not know exactly to a particular piece of
what to search information quickly

Meta Search
Used for difficult
to find information
Before you begin your
search
Think of the following:

What is your topic?

What are the key concepts in your topic?
Are there other ways in which you can express
these key concepts?
Search Engine: When to
use?
 For getting specific information on a topic

 When we know the exact titles, phrases,

image, rather than a general subject
Examples:
• AltaVista (http://www.altavista.com)
• Excite (http://www.excite.com)
• Google (http://www.google.com)
• Hotbot (http://www.hotbot.lycos.com)
• All the Web (http://www.alltheweb.com)
Directories
• For general information on broad topic
• To explore different areas of broad topic
• Arranged by subjects
• Can search by using keywords or listed
categories

Example:
Look Smart(http://www.looksmart.com/)
WebBrain (http://www.webbrain.com)
Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com)
Yahoolingans(http://www.yahooligans.com
Meta Search
To search multiple databases simultaneously for difficult
to find information and gives a consolidated report of its
findings(all the best search engines piled into one)
With one single click, it searches the best results from
the combined pool of the world's leading search engines
-- instead of results from only one single search engine.
Use a metasearch engine as a starting point when you are
looking for a unique word or name, or an overview of what
is available
Example:
• Dogpile (http://www.dogpile.com)
• Metacrawler(http://www.metacrawler.com)
• AskJeeves (http://www.askjeeves.com)
Capturing electronic
information
Different methods for capturing or saving your
search results:
• printing
• copying and pasting
• downloading to disk
• forwarding to an e-mail account
• Procedures vary greatly depending on which
database your are using and how you are
accessing it. Consult the online help for further
information
