structure as the Reading Workshop (mini-lesson followed by independent work, conferences and small group teaching) however the children follow the writing process to create, fine-tune and publish a piece of writing across the genres. The steps of the writing process are:
Brainstorm seed ideas Draft stories Revise several pieces Edit one piece Publish and Celebrate your hard work

SPELLING

GRAMMAR AND HANDWRITING

Each week the children will learn a new spelling principle. We will brainstorm words that fit the specific principle. Then they will pick 15-20 words to study for the week. They will practice the words in their spelling work books in class and in their homework books at home.

The children will learn how the English language works so they can read, write and understand it with greater ease. This year we will learn how to write in script.

We

will be using the Pearson Success materials to support our math curriculum. I teach a focused skills lesson using the Smartboard, hands on manipulatives , useful strategies and group discussion. Then we practice the skill in our workbook and for homework.

Almost

everyday I will read to the children from quality literature that supports our reading work and serves as model exemplars for our writing units. During Read-Alouds the children talk, think and write about books in a scaffolded way. Later they will use these same skills and strategies independently during Reading Workshop.

SOCIAL STUDIES

SCIENCE

Our S.S. work will begin with map skills then grow into the study of other countries. The children will have the opportunity to use strong literature, technology, textbooks and experiences to support their Social Studies learning.

We will be using our textbooks, technology and lab work to support our Science work.

DLR/DMR

STARS

Each day we will take about 10 minutes to review basic skills in order to keep them fresh in our minds. We will also get used to reading and answering types of questions that may appear on their state tests

The STARS program was developed by New York State in order to directly teach important comprehension skills that will help children become even stronger readers during independent work and in testing situations.
