Naming the sides of the Triangle

= Theta = Phi

The Hypotenuse is the longest side of the triangle across from the right angle. The other two (Opposite and Adjacent) depend on which ACUTE ANGLE youre currently looking at in the triangle.

Trigonometric (Trig) Ratios

The length of any two sides of a right triangle has a ratio or relationship to one another. Each ratio is a function of an acute angle.

How to Solve a Triangle

1. Label everything you know sides and angles (use a + b = c, if necessary) 2. Determine which Trig. ratio (SOH, CAH or TOA) you need to use 3. Plug in the known values and solve for the unknown 4. If you need to solve for the angle use the inverse of the trig function (sin, cos, tan).

Steps: 1. Label everything you know about the 2. Find the Trig ratio to use SOH-CAH-TOA 3. Plug in your known values and solve for the unknown 4. When solving for the angle take the inverse of the function (sin, cos, tan).

To solve for angle take the inverse of the sin, which is sin, of 8/10.

Lesson 12.1 Problem 5 Make sure they realize that each value of sin represents the ratio of the opposite side to the hypotenuse in EVERY right triangle with that acute angle. So in this example, the angle is 53.130, so EVERY right triangle with a 53.130 angle, its SIDES will be in the ratio 8/10 or 0.800. It means that the Opposite side is 0.800 the size of the hypotenuse.
