What is Process Control System?

THE DEFINITION

What is Process Control System?

The use of a computer system to automate and regulate the operations or processes of a system Monitors a manufacturing environment and electronically controls the process or manufacturing flow based on limits set by the user

Encompasses the means by which tasks are accomplished by industries, machines, or organisms.

Generally a continuous, "24/7" working effort

Uses of Process Control System

Industrial Steam System

Control of temperature

Process Control Systems

Biotech Processes

Automated Factories

Importance of PCSs
Reduce Variability
Ensures a consistently high-quality product

Ensure Safety
Maintain precise control of all of the processed variables

Increase Efficiency
Some processes need to be maintained at a specific point to maximize efficiency

THE STRUCTURE

Structures of Process Control System

field net manages input and output equipment. process net defines PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controllers, motor controls, interlocking and basic logic, and calculations control net. where section- or department-wide control is implemented.

What are the different types of PCS?

THE SUBTYPES

Subtypes
Discrete Process Control Found in many manufacturing, motion and packaging applications which involve the production of discrete pieces of product Continuous Process Control A physical system is represented through variables that are smooth and uninterrupted in time Batch Process Control Some applications require that specific quantities of raw materials be combined in specific ways for particular durations to produce an intermediate or end result

What are the basic elements?

COMPONENTS & DIAGRAM

PROCESS
Programs that are run by a process agent on the same workstation, within a process control system

MEASUREMENT
Refers to the transduction of the variable into some corresponding analog of the variable

EVALUATION
Examine the measurement and determine what action, if any, should be taken

CONTROL ELEMENT
The device that exerts a direct influence on the process, that is, that provides those required changes in the dynamic variable to bring it to the setpoint condition
