The number or nerve cells in the human body exceeds the number of stars in the Milky Way A child developing inside the womb, grows neurons at the rate of 250,000 per minute By the time of its birth, the baby's brain consists of around 10 million nerve cells The weight of the brain in average adult males is 1,375 grams The weight of the brain in average adult females is 1,275 grams As we grow older, the brain loses a gram of weight a year
Scientist/Researcher
Camillo Golgi This Italian cytologist shares the 1906 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research into the nervous system. He discovered that if you used silver compounds to strain microscope slides of nerve tissue, new and unseen structures could be seen. This technique also showed the individual neurons in the brain.
Scientist/Researcher
Andre Fielding Huxley
This english physiologist shares the 1963 Nobel Prize in Medicine with John Carew Eccles and Alan Hodgkin for their discoveries and research involving nerve action potentials. These are the electrical signals that enable a nerve's coordination with the central nervous system. They hypothesized the existence of ion channels that transport the actual nerve signal that would be discovered in the 1970s.
Nervous System
Nervous System
controls and coordinates function throughout the body and responds to internal and external stimuli controls all the activities of the body The brain helps us to notice changes in temperature, light, touch and stress This is it's way of telling us what is happening to our body
Nervous System
-Emotions
-Thoughts -Movement
Nervous System
Nervous System is made of
- brain - spinal cord - the senses
Stimulus
The nervous system allows our body to respond to a stimulus.
A stimulus is a change in our surroundings. Receptors are cells that monitor the stimuli. Example: Touching a hot stove will cause a person to respond by screaming or feeling pain. This is called Autonomic, since the person does not have to think about their reaction.

The brain
Cerebellum
Brain stem
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It controls your thoughts, memory, speaking, and movement.
The cerebellum is the second largest part of the brain. It controls balance and posture
The brain stem connects the brain and spinal cord together. The function is to control your heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure
