There Was An Old Monster by Rebecca and Adrian Emberley Patterned after There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly the monster swallows things to help his stomach ache. PreK students tear paper to create eyes and then draw in their monster around them. Kindergartens create monsters with crayons and draw what they ate showing in their stomachs.

The Little White Owl by Tracey Corderoy and Jane Chapman Story of finding friends and acceptance of others who are different.

Guided drawing of an Owl. Create an antique drawing by crumpling it up and then soaking it in watered down tempera and squeezing the liquid out.

The Lion & the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney Classic story of the Lion and the Mouse. Beautiful drawings with no words. Students can guess what will happen use their observation skills to guess the story. Guided drawing of a lion mix red and yellow to paint the mane. Discuss how the drawing is a lioness and when we add the mane it is a lion.

Theres A Wocket in My Pocket by Dr. Suess A silly rhyming story. Students create their own wocket using paper scraps. Then they create a pocket for their wocket to live in. Fun to do on Dr. Suess day.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats The story of a little boy who goes out after it snows.

I usually use this after we have had snow days. Students use oil pastels to draw what they did on their days off.

The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Pinkwater Story of a man who decorates his house to look like all of his dreams.

Students use shapes to create their dream houses.

Birds by Kevin Henkes Look at all the sizes and shapes birds come in!

Students use oil pastels to create a drawing of looking out the window at a bird on a tree. Spatial relations such as inside, outside and overlapping.

Stars, Stars, Stars by Bob Barner A boy and his dog go on an outer space journey learning about planets and stars.

Students get lots of different sized cups and lids to trace. They will create an outer space scene using silver sharpies on black paper.

The Pot That Juan Built by Nancy Andrews-Goebel A fun rhyming/repeat story about how Juan digs for his clay and creates his pot. The book has the poem as well as biographical information about Juan Quezada it is like two books in one.

Students create a pinch pot and paint or glaze it.

A Tree Is Nice by Janice May Udry Story of trees and how people interact with them. Deciduous trees and how they change through the seasons.

Students learn to make Y trees and create a tree picture that includes a family story showing the season. We talk about seasons and what a tree looks like in each season.

The First Day of Winter by Denise Fleming Patterned after the 12 days of Christmas, the snowman receives something on each of the first ten days of winter. Students create snowmen from an interesting perspective. They paint the snowman with tempera then add the details in oil pastel.

Animal Dreaming by Paul Morin An Aboriginal origin story. Students create a dot painting on bark. They also make an animal xray drawing that gets cut out and glued on top of the dot painting.

Roberto the Insect Architect By Nina Laden The story of Roberto, a termite who likes to build with wood rather than eat it! Students create houses made out of paper lunch bags. When complete they create a community with them on bulletin board paper.

Matthews Dream by Leo Lionni Story about Matthews Dream after he visits an art museum on a field trip. He transforms his space and his life when he becomes a famous artist. Students decorate their portfolios with a swirly frame and an abstract design of organic shapes. They learn different ways to use their crayons.

Pattern Fish By Trudy Harris A fun pattern book where students can guess the next page.

Students draw a fish or underwater creature and fill it with bleeding tissue paper and mod podge. After it is dry they create patterns on top of the tissue paper. Each student cuts out their fish and pastes it on a class mural.

When Clay Sings by Byrd Baylor Story about how you can hear the stories of the ancestors in the clay pieces found in the sand. Students create pinch pots and decorate them with Native American designs.

Ish by Peter Reynolds Ramon learns that thinking "ish-ly" is far more wonderful than "getting it right".

Students decorate their portfolios with six ish drawings that tell about them. Four drawings are nouns and two are feelings. Student learn how to create a shadow to make the squares look like they are sitting on top of the portfolio.

i live in music By Ntozake Shange A poem inspired by the collage work of Romare Bearden.

3rd Grade created instrument drawings with the background collaged with tissue paper. 5th grade created collages of bodies responding to music.

Marguerite Makes a Book By Bruce Robertson A young girl named Marguerite assists her father, Jacques, in his craft of creating illuminating manuscripts for the nobility of France. Marguerite travels all over Paris buying goose feathers for quills, eggs for mixing paints, dried plants and ground minerals for pigments. Students create Illuminated letters.
