Such violent feeling was too much for him. Rather than suffer
the wave of hatred which his presence in France had excited,
Nobel decided to leave the country and work in San Remo,
then a peaceful little seaside resort on the Italian Riviera.
There he made several new discoveries in other branches of
Chemistry and Physics, but he could not escape the odium to
the world even in this retreat. He had given all his time and
energy to the development of a particular field of science, and
what was the result ? A fortune, yes –the money kept pouring
in. For the rest, dislike and deliberate misunderstanding from
all around him

the Nobel Trust from which the munificent Nobel Prizes are
awarded…….
Five of these prizes are awarded every year regardless
of the nationality of the candidate. Three go to those who have
made the most important contribution to Physics, Chemistry
and medicine : one , the literary award, to the author whose
work shows most distinction in its idealistic qualities : another

Character sketch of Alfred Nobel
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish scientist. From his very childhood
he was interested in explosives because his father who was an
engineer made mines. He was a great inventor. He invented
explosives like nitroglycerine and dynamite. These inventions
made him very rich. But the French criticised him for his
inventions. They called him an “evil genius” and “a self-
educated master of destruction”. This broke his heart. He left
the country and went to live in a peaceful little seaside resort
on the Italian Riviera. He died in 1896. Before his death he set
aside a large sum of money from which Nobel Prizes are given
