INTRODUCTION

This Lesson is an extract from the author’s

book ‘The Discovery of India’. He makes
us realize that there is unity in India. The
variety on the surface only emphasizes the
underlying unity of India. This unity binds
the various communities of India together.
One culture + One Heritage

One Language + one way of life = UNITY

The variety of India is great. It is very clear. It can
be seen in physical features as well as in certain mental
habits and traits. There is hardly anything common
outwardly between a Pathan from the North-west and a
Tamil in the far South. They differ in face and figure, food
and clothing and language. The customs of the people in
the North-West and Kashmir remind us of the countries
beyond the Himalayas.
These countries and Afghanistan were
united with India for thousands of year. The old Turkish
and other races of Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia
were Buddhists before the coming of Islam. Before that
these races were Hindus. The frontier area was one of the
main centres of old Indian culture. It has several ruins of
Hindu monuments.
East or West…….
INDIA is the best…….
Differences of big or small can always be noticed even
within a very well knit national group. The unity of that
group becomes apparent when it is compared to another
national group. He would have felt a stranger in another
country. Those having a religion of non- Indian origin
became Indians after settling down in India. They are
Christians, Jews, Parsis, Muslims.
In the modern age, the conception of Nationalism
has developed much more. Indians in foreign countries
form a national group and hang together for various
reasons.
All the Indians have of different pictures of their
native land. While thinking of India Nehru thinks of
many things- fields, villages, towns and cities, rainy
season, which is life giving, great rivers and their flowing
waters, the snow covered Himalayas and beautiful
Kashmir valley.
