Overview of gating system, pattern design and
defects.
Design of pattern with allowances .
Calculation of volume, weight of casting and pouring
time.
Calculation for gating system.

Shrinkage allowances for various
metals
Material Pattern dimensions , mm Shrinkage Allowances
(mm/m)
Grey cast iron Up to 600 10.5
600 to 1200 8.5

Calculations for shrinkage

For dimension 12.5 cm,
allowances 12.5*13/1000 = 0.1625
after allowances=12.5+0.1625=12.662 cm
For dimension 10cm,
allowances 10*13/1000 = 0.13
after allowances=10+0.13=10.13cm
For dimension 2.5 cm,
allowances 2.5*13/1000 = 0.0325
after allowances=2.5 +0.0325=2.53cm

Calculation For weight of casting
Density of aluminium () : 2.7 g/ cm
Melting Temperature : 660.37 C
Volume of casting =5500 cm
Mass of casting = volume X density of metal used
= 5500 *2.7Kg
=14.85kg

Mass of metal poured = X 100

Casting yield for aluminium =25 40 (30 taken)

Mass of metal poured (W) =

W = 49.5 Kg

Pouring rate =

hence, pouring time(t)=

t = =99 sec.

Calculating the Choke Area
Choke Area =

Effective head of casting(H): h-c/2
here ht = 23 cm
c = 10.43cm
Hence , H = 17.78cm
W= casting mass

Density of aluminium = 2.7 g/cm

Efficiency factor(C) = 0.90 (from table)

Therefore ,

Runner and Gate design
calculation:
For Aluminium casting gating ratio= 1:3:3
Runner Area = 3 X

= 3 X = 991.8 cm
2

Assuming trapezoidal cross section and w:h=1,the
runner dimension would be = 31.49 /28.41cm
(approx.).h=31.49,w=31.49 cm.
Calculating the in gate area and dimension;
gate area = 1.5 X 330.6 =495.9 cm
2

Assuming aspect ratio of 4 , (width to height ratio)
the size of gate = 11.34 cm X 44.53 cm (approx.)
