Right Hand Rule

Madelle Anne S. Inocando Bea Isabella P. Bandala

To determine the direction of the magnetic field in a conductor, the right-hand rule is applied.

1st RIGHT HAND RULE

If the conductor is grasped in the right hand with the thumb pointed in the direction of the conventional (positive) current, the forefingers will curl around the conductor in the direction of the magnetic field.

When a wire is bent into a loop and an electric current flows through it, the right hand rule remains valid.

If the wire is coiled into two loops, many of the lines of force become large enough to include both loops. Lines of force go through the loops in the same direction, circle around the outside of the two coils, and come in at the opposite end.

When a wire contains many such loops, it is called a coil. The lines of force form a pattern through all the loops, causing a high concentration of flux lines through the center of the coil.

2nd RIGHT HAND RULE

The forefinger points to the direction of the current, middle finger shows the direction of the magnetic field, while the thumb points to the direction of the force on the wire. The magnetic force is always perpendicular to the direction of the current I and the magnetic field, B.

Exercises:
1.

A long straight overhead conductor carries a steady conventional current from the north toward the south. You stand directly below the wire. The direction of the magnetic field at the location of your head is ___.

West South Downward Upward North East East

2.

A rectangular current carrying loop lies along side a long straight conductor as in the figure below and to the right. The net magnetic force exerted on the loop by the straight conductor will be ___.

Zero Directed toward the wire Directed perpendicular to the plane of the current loop Directed away from the wire Directed away from the wire

3. In the figure at the right, two long parallel conductors carry conventional currents. If the direction of the magnetic force on the first conductor is toward the right side of the page, the direction of the conventional current in the second conductor is ___. Toward the bottom of the page Toward the top of the page Toward the top of the page

4. Two long straight conductors carry conventional currents directed as in the figure at the right. The direction of the magnetic force exerted on the conductor with current I1 is ___ of the page. Toward the bottom Toward the left side Toward the top Toward the top Perpendicular to and into Perpendicular to and out Toward the right side
