THE 4 HEADS
LISTENING READING WRITING SPEAKING
LISTENING
# Listening is equally, if not more, important than Speaking. # Empathic Listening: make the speaker feel important. Think in the speakers shoes. Listen with the third ear: the ear of sensitivity. # Critical Listening: evaluate what is being spoken. Grasp the main focus of a speech, its essential idea and purpose. Weigh and evaluate what is spoken from the point of view of logic. # Active Listening: To listen, understand and interpret what is being spoken by suspending judgment and without bias
Maintain eye contact with the Speaker. Try to paraphrase, at every pause, that which has been said Take brief meaningful notes to aid your memory for giving replies. Defer judgment till the Speaker has finished. Listening is a skill and it can be learned Remember when you speak you will not hear. Cultivate the habit of speaking less. Listening to non verbal language is equally important. The body is full of silent signals known as observable behavior. Each transmits a message.
SPEAKING
# The easiest and yet a difficult method of communication. # Speaking is both internal and external. Internal is introspective and non voluble. # Speaking and listening go together. A ratio of 1:2 is a good communication signal.
3 STEPS:
a. fact contributing: do your homework well. Gather all the information that you want. You need a plan and blueprint to speak. b. inference-drawing: it is about building up an argument. It is based on assumptions. This is called Logical Talking. c. arriving at a conclusion or approaching a consensus or a course of action.
# English as a speaking medium is important but Grammar is not. # Avoid Translation: it will waste time. # Words are carts ,thoughts are horses, do not put the cart before the horse.
