CHAPTER 1 - Introduction

The management of waste poses to be a major problem in most of the countries, especially hospital waste. It is an ongoing problem for many countries. In recent years, medical waste disposal has posed even more difficulties with the appearance of disposable needles, syringes, and other similar items (WHO, 2006).

General Objectives

The main objective of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice on waste management of nurses in private hospital in Iloilo City.

Specific Objectives
determine the respondents personal characteristics in terms of gender, age, and number of years of working experience, determine the respondents level of knowledge on hospital waste management,

determine the respondents attitude towards hospital waste management, determine the hospital waste management practices of the respondents, determine whether or not there are significant relationship in the respondents level of knowledge regarding waste management and their personal characteristics in terms of gender, age, and number of years of working experience, determine whether or not there is a significant relationship in the respondents attitude towards waste management and their personal characteristics in terms of gender, age, and number of years of

Hypotheses
There is no significant relationship in the respondents level of knowledge regarding waste management and their personal characteristics in terms of gender, age, and number of years of working experience. There is no significant relationship in the respondents attitude towards waste management and their personal characteristics in terms of gender, age, and number of years of working experience. There is no significant relationship in the respondents waste management practices and their personal characteristics in terms of gender, age, and number of years of working

There is no significant relationship between respondents knowledge and their attitude towards waste management. Scope and Limitations


This study was limited to the knowledge, attitude, and practice on waste management that was conducted in a private hospital (Iloilo Mission Hospital). The respondents of the study were nurses in the aforementioned hospital.

Research Design Descriptive-relational study and post test only (One Shot Survey) design. Self-administered questionnaire.

Population and Sampling Iloilo Mission Hospital Simple Random Sampling n= NZ2 (p(1-p))/ Nd2 + Z2 (p(1-p)) 200 nurses (population) 132 nurses (sample)

Findings

Generally (65.2%) of the respondents were female. A greater number of the respondents belonged to the 25 to 30 years old (54.5%) category and most of them had work experience of 1 to 3 years (47.7%). The respondents have a high level of knowledge (87.1%). The respondents attitude towards hospital waste management was very positive (68.2%). The respondents hospital waste management practices (82.6%) belong to the category of good practice. Respondents whom most of which are male (93.5%); whose age less than 25 years old (95.8%); and those with less than 1 year work experience (90%) have high level of knowledge. There is a

The respondents personal characteristics have no significant relationship to their attitude towards hospital waste management. Respondents whom most of which are female (86%); those who are above 30 years old (100%) and those with more than 3 years (92.3%) have good hospital waste management. There is a significant relationship between the respondents hospital waste management and their age.

No significant relationship was found between the level of knowledge of the respondents and their attitude towards hospital waste management. No significant relationship was found between the level of knowledge of the respondents and their hospital waste management practices. No significant relationship was found between the attitude of the respondents and their hospital waste management practices.

Conclusion

Majority of the respondents are female, aged 25 to 30 years old with 1 to 3 years of work experience in the said private hospital. The respondents have a high level of knowledge on hospital waste management. The respondent attitude towards hospital waste management is very positive. The respondents waste management practices is good. There is no significant relationship to the respondents knowledge on hospital waste management when respondents were grouped according to gender and work experience. But age is significantly related to their knowledge on hospital waste management.

But age is significantly related to their hospital waste management practice. There is no significant relationship between the level of knowledge of the respondents and their attitude towards hospital waste management.

Recommendations
Staff Nurses Encouraged to review and familiarize themselves with the RA 9003 Waste Management Act. Be aware in issues concerning not only hospital waste management but waste management as a universal approach. Put into consideration the amount of waste they are generating in every procedure . utilize the 3Rs in waste management without compromising the spread of infection.

Student Nurses strictly follow hospital waste management even if they see others do otherwise Hospital Administrator: maintain waste management as one of their top priorities Patients should not hesitate asking the nurse regarding hospital waste management

Researchers study should be replicated with the same methodology and add other antecedent variables expand the span of location in the study as well as the respondents. studies on management of hospital waste should also use larger, more diverse sample size.
