CCP-105.17 1
Objectives
On completion of this period, you would be able to
Know :
The Use Of Some Input devices like :
 TOUCH SCREEN

 PUNCH CARDS & PAPERS s

 JOYSTICK

 LIGHT PEN

 PROCESSING SPEED

CCP-105.17 2
RECAP
 Mark Sense Reader
 Character represented by combination of boxes in a
column

 Optical Mark Reading and Recognition (OMR)

 Preprinted forms used for objective type questions

 Optical Character Reader or Recognition (OCR)

 Interprets handwritten marks, characters and any printed text
CCP-105.17 3
RECAP
 Magnetic Ink Character Read or Recognition
(MICR)
 Used by banking indutry for processing magnetic
ink Cheques
 Bar-Code Readers
 Data coded in the form of light and dark lines
known as bar codes

CCP-105.17 4
Input devices
 Punch Cards
 Punching Machines
 Verifiers
 Card – Readers
 Paper Tapes
 Tele-Typewriter
 Disk Drives
 Tape - Drive

PUNCHED HOLE DEVICE
 One of the oldest and cheapest (I/O) devices
 Cards and paper tapes are the two most familiar
punched hole devices
 Data is recorded on these in the form of
punched holes using some standard code
representing data

CCP-105.17 7
Punched cards
 Most widely used input
 Medium for most computer systems in the past
 In a 80 column card, each column can represent one
character
 This coding system used to represent data is known
as Hollerith Code
 A card reader reads the information punched into a
card converting the presence or absence of a hole
into an electrical pulses that the CPU can accept
 Speed :- 1000 card per minute
CCP-105.17 8
Paper tapes
 These have a series of columns with characters
represented by a pattern of holes
 A hole represents 1 while the absence of a hole
represents 0
 It has 8 characters and tracks
 Information from the tape is read through a Tape
Reader which generally reads upto 260 characters
per second

CCP-105.17 9
Touch Screen

 It allows the user to operate a computer by simply

touching the display screen
 Example :- ATM at a bank

CCP-105.17 10
JOYSTICK

 A joystick is an input device consisting of a rotating

shaft that is used to move the cursor or other
objects on the visual unit. It is usually used in
video games

CCP-105.17 11
Light pen

 It uses a light sensor device to select objects on a

display screen
 It is similar to a mouse
 Select any object on the screen by directly pointing to
the object with the light pen.
 It can also be used to draw flexible diagrams on
screen

CCP-105.17 12
Processing speed
There are four basic ways to know a computer system’s
performance:
 Word Length
 Clock Speed
 Instruction Set
 Instructions Executed

CCP-105.17 13
Word length

 The number of bits that a computer can handle

simultaneously

 The first PC could process 8 bits at a time

 Word lengths are generally in the range of 8 to 64

bits

CCP-105.17 14
Clock speed
 The performance of a processor can be improved by
making it run faster
 Measured in terms of the number of clock cycles
(ticks of clock ) per second
 Specified in megahertz (millions of cycles per second
or MHZ) or gigahertzs(billions of cycles per second)
 All processors do not process instructions in the
same number of clock cycles
 The higher the clock speed, the faster the computer

CCP-105.17 15
The following table gives the details of
Intel Processors’ family.
PROCESSOR WORD LENGTH CLOCK SPEED
4004 4-bit 750 KHz
8085 8-bit 3- 6 MHz
8086 16-bit 5-10 MHz
8088 16-bit 5-8MHz
80286 16-bit 6-12 MHz
80386 32-bit 20-33 MHz
80486 32-bit 25-100 MHz
Pentium 32-bit 60-200 MHz
Pentium Pro 32-bit 159-200 MHz
Pentium -II 32-bit 233-400 MHz
Pentium -III 32-bit 600-1000 MHz
Pentium -IV 32/64 -bit 1.2 - 3 GHz
