Name : K. Srinivas
Designation : Senior Lecturer
Branch : DCCP
Institute : SGM Govt. Polytechnic,
Abdullapurmet
Year/Semester : II Yr / III Semester
Subject : Quantitative Techniques - I
Sub.Code : CCP303
Topic : Quartiles, Deciles, Percentiles
Duration : 50 Mts
Sub-Topic : Quartiles, Deciles, Percentiles
Teaching Aids : PPT & Animations
CCP303.51 1
Objectives :
On Completion of this period, you would be
able to understand:

 What Quartiles, Deciles, Percentiles are

 How to calculate them

CCP303.51 2
Recap

In the previous classes, YOU learnt and solved

problems on Measures of Central Value
(Averages) viz.,

3) AM
4) Median Averages give one central figure,
5) Mode which is representative of all the
6) GM and values in the given series
7) HM

CCP303.51 3
DISPERSION

Averages do not tell the full story about data.

Study of DISPERSION required to know how each

individual item is scattered around Average Value.

CCP303.51 4
Measures of DISPERSION

1) Positional/Distance Measures

3) Average Measures

CCP303.51 5
1. POSITIONAL MEASURES

These divide series into equal parts

Eg:
 Quartiles
 Deciles
 Percentiles etc.,
NOTE: You will know MORE about DISPERSION in coming classes.
In this class let us discuss about Quartiles, Deciles, Percentiles.

CCP303.51 6
1. Quartiles:

 There are THREE Quartiles dividing the total

frequency into FOUR equal parts
Total Frequency
Q1 Q2 Q3

CCP303.51 7
Quartiles Contd:

 All 3 Quartiles represented by Q1, Q2, Q3

 ‘Q1’ is called FIRST Quartile/Lower Quartile
 ‘Q2’ is called Second Quartile (equal to
Median)
 ‘Q3’ is called THIRD Quartile/Upper Quartile

CCP303.51 8
2. Deciles:

 Divide the total frequency into 10 equal parts

 Divided into 9 parts
 Nine Deciles can be computed
 Denoted by ‘D’ [ D1, D2,……D9 ]

CCP303.51 9
3. Percentiles:

 Divide the total frequency into 100 equal

parts
 Divided into 99 parts
 Ninety Nine Percentiles can be computed
 Denoted by ‘P’ [ P1, P2, P3…P51, …P99 ]

CCP303.51 10
Graphic Representation :

 Quartiles, Deciles, Percentiles, etc., can be

represented through GRAPHS

 Partition values divides the area of

frequency curves or histogram into equal
parts

CCP303.51 11
Other Partition Values:
 Quantiles
 5 Parts
 Septiles
 7 Parts
 Octiles
 8 Parts

CCP303.51 12
Applications/Uses:
 Quartiles
 Widely used in Economics and business
 Deciles and Percentiles
 Used in psychological and educational
statistics (Eg: grades, rates, ranks, etc)
 Used in Economics and business
statistics (Eg: productivity ratings)

CCP303.51 13
Computation :
 Procedure for calculating Quartiles, Deciles,
Percentiles, etc., is same as Median
 Can be computed for
 Individual series & Discrete series
 Add ‘1’ to ‘N’
 Continuous series
 Do not add ‘1’ to ‘N’

CCP303.51 14
Individual Observations & Discrete
Series :
 Quartiles
 Q1 = Size of (N + 1) th item
4
 Q3 = Size of 3(N + 1) th item
4
 Deciles (for example)
 D4 = Size of 4(N + 1) th item
10
 Percentiles (for example)
P65 = Size of 65(N + 1) th item
100
CCP303.51 15
Continuous Series :
Quartiles
Q1 = Size of N th item
4
Q3 = Size of 3N th item
4
Deciles (for example)
D4 = Size of 4N th item
10
Percentiles (for example)
P65 = Size of 65N th item
100

CCP303.51 16
Summary :
Individual observations & Continuous Series
Discrete Series
Qk = Size of k(N+1) th item Qk = Size of kN th item
4 4
Dk = Size of k(N+1) th item Dk = Size of kN th item
10 10
Pk = Size of k(N+1) th item Pk = Size of kN th item

* ‘k’ is the position for which Quartiles / Deciles /

Percentiles are computed
