PROBLEM ON EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE
ON RESISTANCE
Problem :1
A Platinum coil has a resistance of 3.146Ω at 40°C and
3.767 Ώ at 100°C .Find its resistance at 0°.

Solution :
At t = 40°, R1 = R40 = 3.146Ώ
at t = 100°C , Rt = R100 = 3.767Ω

We know that R1= R0 ( 1 + α t)

Therefore R40 = R0 ( 1+ α 0. 40 )
And R100 = R0 ( 1+ α 0 . 100 )
R100/R40 = R0 ( 1+ 100 α 0)/ REC105.17
0 ( 1+ 40 α 0).
3
3.767/3.146 = 1+100 α 0/1+40 α0
or α0= 0.00379/°C.

Substituting the value of α 0 in

Equation (1)

R40 = R0 ( 1+0.00379x 40 )
3.146 = R0 ( 1.1516)
R0 = 2.732Ω.

Problem 2.

The resistance of conductor at 20°C is 3.15Ω and at 100°C

is 3.75Ω.Calculate the temperature coefficient of
resistance of the conductor and its resistance at 0°C.

Solution :

At t = 20°C Rt = R20 = 3.15Ω.

At t = 100°C Rt = R100 = 3.75Ω.

EC105.17 5
We know that Rt= Ro( 1+αot)

therefore R20 = Ro(1+ α o χ20)

and R100 = Ro( 1+ α o x100)

R100/R20 = Ro(1+100 α o)/Ro(1+20 α o)

3.75/3.15 = 1+ 100 α o/1+20 α o

or α o= 0.0025/°C Substituting the value

of α o in equation (1)

R20 =Ro(1+20х0.0025)

3.15 = Ro(1.05 )
Ro = 3Ω. EC105.17 6
Problem : 3

A copper coil has a resistance of 12.7 ohms at 18°C and

14.3ohms at 50 °C .Find Temperature coefficient of
resistance at 0°C and resistance of coil at 0°C.

Solution :
At t = 18°C Rt = R 18 =12.7Ω at t = 50°C.
Rt = R50 = 14.3 Ω .
We know that Rt = Ro(1+ αo t).

Hence Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of a material

may be defined as the change in resistance per ohm per
degree centigrade.

EC105.17 7
R18 = Ro (1+ α o ×18 ) ----------( 1 )
And R50 =Ro (1+ α o х50 )---------(2)
R50/R18 = Ro( 1+ α o х50)/Ro(1+ α o х18).
14.3/12.7 = 1+50 α o/1+18α o or αo = 0.00423/°C or
4.23 x 10 -3 °C substituting the value of α o in equation (1) .
R18 = Ro (1 +4.23х10¯³χ 18).
12.7 = Ro (1+1.076 ).
Ro = 11.8 Ω.
(1) Temperature coeff.at 0°C α o is 4.23Х10-3/°C.
(11) Resistance of coil at 0°C ,Ro is 11.8Ω.
