Duration : 50 minutes.
Subject topic : Dielectric constant and dielectric
strength.
EC105.30 1
Teaching aids : PPT.
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would able to know:

• The definition of Dielectric strength of a material

EC105.30 2
Recap

• We have already discussed in previous topic:

• Definition of dielectric constant

EC105.30 3
Dielectric Strength
• Maximum potential gradient that a insulating
material withstand with out rupture.

• Practically it is breakdown voltage divided by the

thickness between electrodes.

• This is expressed in volts or kilovolts per unit

thickness of the material.

• Dielectric strength of material depend upon

temperature and humidity

EC105.30 4
Dielectric Strength of Different Materials

Material Dielectric strength (v/mil)

oxide
ceramics 80-1200
glass 8

Dielectric Strength of different materials
contd..

Mica 3-8
Oil 2-5

Paper 2-6
Plastic film 2-3
Tantalum oxide 25

EC105.30 6
Dielectric strength

• Every insulating material posses an electrical

capacitance.

• This capacitance depends on dimensions and kind of

dielectric between plates.

• Thus of dielectric constant is measure of its ability to

form an electric capacitance insulating material

EC105.30 7
Dielectric strength (Contd..)

• Dielectric constant is not constant but varies with

temperature and frequency.

• It decreases with the increase in frequency due to

inability of polarizing charges to follow the electric field
variations.
