EC-105.36 to37 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would able calculate:

• Equivalent capacitance of capacitor connected in parallel.

EC-105.36 to37 2
Recap

We have already discussed in previous topic:

• Equivalent capacitance of capacitor are connected in series.

EC-105.36 to37 3
Capacitors connected in Parallel:

• Two or more capacitors are connected in Parallel the

capacitance increase.

• Because it has the effect of adding the plate areas.

• Therefore the total capacitance is the sum of individual

capacitances.

EC-105.36 to37 4
Three capacitors connected in Parallel:
+ Q1 -
C1
Q2
+ -
C2
Q3

C3

V
Capacitors connected in Parallel.

• C1, C2, C3 = Capacitances of three capacitors.

• Q1, Q2, Q3 = Charge on three capacitors

• V= Applied voltage.
EC-105.36 to37 5
Capacitors connected in Parallel combination:

• Potential difference across each capacitor is same but

charge on each capacitor is different.

• Q = Q 1 + Q2 + Q3

• CV = C1V + C2V + C3V

• C = C 1 + C2 + C 3

• Or in General C = C1 + C2 + C3 +……..+Cn

EC-105.36 to37 6
Example 1:

10μF, 20μF and 5μF are connected in parallel. Find the

total Capacitance.

• Solution: When three capacitors are connected in

parallel

• C = C 1 + C2 + C 3

• C = 10μF + 20μF +5μF

• So C = 35μF

EC-105.36 to37 7
Example 2:

Three capacitors of capacitances 10μF, 50μF and 25μF are

joined in parallel across a 250V DC Supply.

• Calculate (i) Total Capacitance (ii) Charge on each

capacitor.

• Solution: Given Data: C1=10μF, C2=50μF, C3=25μF,

V=250V then (i) C=?, (ii) Q1, Q2, Q3 =?

EC-105.36 to37 8
(i) When capacitors are connected in parallel.

C = C1 + C2 + C3

C = 10μF + 50μF + 25μF

C = 85μF
In Parallel Circuits Voltage is same across each capacitor.

• Q1 = C1V = 10 x 10-06 x 250 = 2500 μC

• Q2 = C2V = 50 x 10-06 x 250 = 12500 μC

• Q3 = C3V = 25 x 10-06 x 250 = 6750 μC

EC-105.36 to37 9
Summary

• Capacitors are connected in parallel, the equivalent

capacitance is

C=C1+C2+C3+…….+CN

• Capacitors are connected in parallel, potential

difference across each capacitor is same but charge
on each capacitor is different.
