Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be able to

know

• The Inductor specifications.

• The total inductance when they are connected in series.

EC105.44 2
Recap

We have discussed so far

• Types of inductors.

4. What are the different types of inductors based on the

core material used?

• Air core inductors.

• Iron core inductors.
• Ferrite core inductors.

EC105.44 3
The main specifications of a inductor are

• Inductance value

• Type of winding

• Insulation resistance

• Power rating

• Temperature coefficient

• Core material

EC105.44 4
Do you know why the inductors are connected
in series or parallel ?

Inductors may be connected in series or parallel in order

to increase or decrease the total inductance depending on

requirement

EC105.44 5
In series combination of inductors:

• The rate of change of current is same in all inductors.

• The total induced e.m.f is equal to the sum of individual

e.m.f`s.

EC105.44 6
Series combination (without M)

Figure-1

EC105.44 7
Let

L1 = Self inductance of coil-1

L2 = Self inductance of coil-2

i = Current flowing through coils

Ls = Total inductance of the series combination

EC105.44 8
Then

Self induced emf in coil-1 is

e1 = -L1 di/dt

Self induced emf in coil-2 is

e2 = -L2 di/dt

EC105.44 9
Total induced e.m.f = Sum of individual e.m.f`s

es = e1+ e2

= -[ L1 di/dt + L2 di/dt]

-Ls di/dt = -(L1 + L2) di/dt

Ls = L1+L2

EC105.44 10
The total inductance of the series combination is given
by formula

L = L1+L2+L3+……….+Ln

EC105.44 11
Problem :

Two inductors with an inductance values of 5H & 10H

are connected in series. Find the equivalent

inductances of the combination.

EC105.44 12
Solution :

Given data is
L1 = 5H
L2 = 10H
Ls = L1+L2
= 5+10
= 15H
Ls = 15H

EC105.44 13
Series combination (with M):

In this case, value of total inductance will be depend upon

• Amount of mutual inductance present &

• Whether the combination is series aiding or series

opposing.

EC105.44 14
Series aiding:

The direction of current flow is such that the two fields aid
each other.

Figure-2
EC105.44 15
Let

L1 = Self inductance of coil-1

L2 = Self inductance of coil-2

M = Mutual inductance between coils

i = Current flowing through coils

Ls = Total inductance of the series combination

EC105.44 16
Then

Self induced e.m.f in coil-1 is

e1 = -L1 di/dt

Mutually induced e.m.f in coil-1 due to current in coil-2 is

e’1 = -M di/dt

Self induced e.m.f in coil-2 is

e2 = -L2 di/dt

Mutually induced e.m.f in coil-2 due to current in coil-1 is

e’2 = -M di/dt

EC105.44 17
Total induced e.m.f = Sum of individual e.m.f`s

es = e1+ e’1+ e2+e’2

= -[L1 di/dt +M di/dt+L2 di/dt +M di/dt]

-Ls di/dt = -(L1 + L2+2M) di/dt

Ls = L1+L2+2M

EC105.44 18
Series opposing:

The direction of current flow is such that the two fields

oppose each other.

Figure-3
EC105.44 19
e1 =- L1di / dt

e’1= M di / dt

e2=-L2di / dt

e’2=M di / dt

es=e1+e’1+e2+e 2

Ls=L1+L2-2M
