OBJECTIVES

On completion of this class you will be able to:

Understand the concept of Ideal voltage source And

Ideal current source
Different Sources Of Electrical Energy

Electromechanical Energy

Ex: Rotating Generator

Electrochemical Energy

Ex: Battery

Photovoltaic Energy

Ex: Solar Cell

Classification

Circuit excitation is possible by Two types of

Electrical Energy sources

• Voltage Source

• Current source

EC 303.37 4
Functions Of Electrical Energy

• Voltage Source

• Energy Delivered With Specified Terminal Voltage ‘V’

• V=W/Q

• VOLTS
Functions Of Electrical Energy

• Current Source

• Energy Delivered With Specified Terminal Current ’I’

• I=Q/t

• AMPERES

EC 303.37 6
• Electrical Energy ‘W’ Expressed In Terms Of Voltage
And Charge
W=VQ

Where ‘W’ In Joules

‘V’ In Volts

‘Q’ In Coulombs
Ideal Voltage Source

An Ideal voltage source is the one whose terminal

voltage remains constant irrespective
I of the load
current and Time and has zero source resistance
Ideal Voltage Source

• It is a two terminal device

• In which terminal voltage V is independent of the

current drawn from the source
I

V
E RL For any RL
• Voltage V is constant w.r.t current I
• The source is idle if output
terminals are
open such that I=0
• If source is short circuit then v=0

Voltage V is constant w.r.t

IDEAL VOLTAGE Source-ex.

• A 1V source should apply 1V potential difference across

1 ohm resistor ( producing 1A current through 1 ohm
resistor).

• Same source producing 1000 A current through 1milli

ohm resistor.

• Same source producing ONE MILLION Amps through

one micro – ohm resistor.
Ideal Voltage Source

An Ideal Current source is the one whose output

Current remains constant irrespective of the load
I
Resistance (impedance) and Time and has infinite
source resistance

Ideal Current Source -Example

• Ideal current source of 1amp should drive 1 amp current

through 1Ω resistor

• Same source should drive 1 amp through 1000Ω resistor

• Same source should drive 1 amp through 1000000Ω

resistor

* It is physically impossible for such an ideal

current or voltage source to exist in reality
