EC-305.44 1
Recap
In the previous topic, you have learnt about

• AM transmitters (high & low level)

• SSB transmitters

• FM transmitters using PKLL

• FM transmitters using arm strong (indirect method)

EC-305.44 2
Objectives:
Upon completion of this topic you will be able to:

• Know the function and working principle of tuned circuit.

• Know the Classification of tuned amplifiers.

• Draw the circuit diagram of single tuned amplifier.

• Know the Working of single tuned circuits used in amplifier.

• Know the frequency response of single tuned amplifier.

EC-305.44 3
Tuned circuit:

• Tuned circuits are used to select a desired frequency or a

selective narrow band of frequencies.

• A tuned circuit basically consists of a parallel combination

of an inductor and a capacitor.

• Tuning (selection) can be achieved by varying the value

of either inductance or capacitance or both.

EC-305.44 4
Tuned amplifier:

• An amplifier circuit containing a tuned circuit is called

tuned amplifier.

• The function of a tuned amplifier is to select the desired

RF signal and rejecting all the other frequencies.

EC-305.44 5
Classification of tuned amplifiers:

• Single tuned amplifier.

• Double tuned amplifier.

EC-305.44 6
Circuit diagram of single tuned amplifier

EC-305.44 7
Working of single tuned amplifier
• A single tuned amplifier consists of a transistor
containing a parallel tuned circuit as the collector load.

• The values of the capacitance and inductance circuit are

selected in such a way that its resonant frequency
equals the frequency of the input signal to be selected.

• The out put from a single tuned amplifier can be

obtained in either by capacitance coupling or through
inductance coupling.

EC-305.44 8
• The high frequency signal to be amplified is given to the
input of the amplifier.

• The resonant frequency of the tuned circuit is made

equal to the frequency of the incoming signal by varying
the capacitance value.

• Tuned amplifier selects and amplifies only the desired

frequency signal.

EC-305.44 9
Resonant frequency:

• The frequency at which capacitive reactance equal to

inductive reactance is called resonant frequency.

• The resonant frequency of LC tuned circuit is given by

fr=1/2¶√(LC).

EC-305.44 10
Frequency response characteristics

Fig .2
EC-305.44 11
• Frequency response is the characteristic curve that
shows the variation of gain with frequency.

• It is observed that the voltage reaches the maximum

value at resonance frequency.

• On either side of the resonant frequency the gain of the

amplifier decreases.

• The sharpness of the characteristics curve depends on

the quality factor Q of the coil.

EC-305.44 12
Problems on resonance:

1). calculate the resonant frequency for a 2-µH inductance

and a capacitance of 3pF.

Fr=1/2¶√(LC)=1/2¶√2×10-6×3×10-12
=1/6.28√6×10-18
=1/6.28×2.45×10-9
= 1/15.4×10-9=65MHz

EC-305.44 13
2).calculate the resonant frequency for a 8-H inductance
and a capacitance of 20µF.

Fr=1/2¶√(LC)=1/2¶√8×20×10-6
=1/6.28√160×10-6
=1/6.28×12.65×10-3
= 1/79.44×10-3=12.6Hz

EC-305.44 14

• Function of a tuned circuit.
• Classification of tuned amplifier.
• Working of single tuned amplifier.
• Frequency response of single tuned amplifier.
• Problems.
