Advanced Fluid Mechanics Midsemester Test 1

Time : 2 hours
Answer all questions
1. Design the pelton turbine for the following data Head : 200m; power developed 748 kw; speed = 300rpm, Cv = 0.98, o=90% (7) 2. A pipeline of 60cm diameter is 1.5 km long. In order to increase it discharge, another parallel line of the same diameter is introduced in the second half of length. Neglecting the minor losses, find the increase in discharge. Take f=0.02. The head at inlet is 30m. (7)

Max. Marks : 40

3. Two reservoirs 5.2 km apart are connected by a pipe line which consists of a 225mm diameter pipe for the first 1.6km, sloping at 5.7m per km. For the remaining distance, the pipe diameter is 150mm laid at a slope of 1.9m per km. The levels of water above the pipe opening are 6m in the upper reservoir and 3.7m in the lower reservoir. Taking f=0.02 and Cc=0.6, calculate the rate of discharge. (6) 4. A single acting pump of 25cm bore and 40cm stroke delivers water through a 10cm diameter delivery pipe to a tank located at 15m above and 20m horizontally from cylinder. If separation occurs at 2.3 m of water absolute, find the maximum permissible speed at which the pump can run without separation for the following two conditions (i) the delivery pipe is horizontal from the pump and then vertical (ii) the delivery pipe is vertical from the pump and then horizontal. Take atmospheric pressure is 10.3m of water. (6)

5. A centrifugal pump is running at 500rpm and discharging 8m3/min against a head of 10m. It has an impeller diameter of 50cm and inner diameter 25cm. Vanes are set back an outlet angle of 450. The constant flow velocity is 2m/sec. Determine manometric efficiency, vane angle at inlet and minimum starting speed. (6) 6. Draw the neat sketches of various draft tubes and explain its functions. (4) 7. Explain briefly about water hammer. (4)

1. Following data refers to Francis turbine. Design the turbine Head = 50m, speed = 540 rpm; Output power: 295kw; h=95%, o=85%, Flow ratio =0.15, Breadth ratio =0.1; Inner diameter to outer diameter=0.5 and 5% circumferential area is occupied by vanes; velocity of flow is constant. 2. Explain briefly about the governing of turbines with a neat sketch. 3. Two reservoirs are connected by a pipe of 800m long. The pipe goes over a hill whose height is 6m above level of water in the upper reservoir. The pipe diameter is 300mm and f=0.02. The difference in water level of the reservoirs is 12.5m. If the pressure of water anywhere in the pipe is not allowed to fall below 1.2m of water. Calculate the length of inlet leg. Also find the discharge. The absolute pressure is 10.3m of water.

4. 5. Test on a turbine runner is 1.25m in diameter at 30m head gave the following results. Power developed 1000kw. RPM =180 and discharge 2.7m3/sec. Find the diameter, speed and discharge of a runner to operate at 45m head and give 2000kw at the same efficiency

6. A triangled pipe net work ABC having the following properties. Find the rate of flow in each pipe. Flow entering at A is 150cumecs. Kab=2; Flow coming out from B is 75 cumecs. Kbc=3. Flow coming out from C is 75 cumecs. Kca=3.
