Non verbal communication include all things , other than words and language , that can convey meaning.

Non verbal communication can take place independent of other methods of communication , it often goes along with verbal communication. Together they make the message more effective.

Non verbal communication has an instant effect because of quicker grasp by the receiver. It takes less time to see a color or a picture and to hear a horn or a bell than to read or hear and understand words and sentences. Visual non verbal methods aids verbal communication. Response to visuals and plain sounds is more powerful than to language. E.g. A cry of agony arouses stronger response than a sad story. It is the best method to convey information to illiterate people, as non verbal communication can overcome the barrier of language.

Body language means the changes that occur in the body position and movements that show what the person is feeling or thinking. Body language always conveys meanings. It is: - Omnipresent (it always accompanies spoken communication) - Emotionally expressive - Dominates Interaction ( more communicative than words) - Seems Trustable
Two important factors that contribute to the appearance grooming and personal hygiene. Care of skin , nails , feet and hair are expected standards ; a person who neglects these aspects makes an unpleasant impression. State of health is a very important factor in a persons appearance , poor health is easily reflected in the appearance.
It is said that face is the index of the mind. Good communicators , be they speakers or listeners , learn to read and interpret facial expressions. The face is the index of the heart. What ever we feel deep within our selves is at once reflected in the face.
A smile is a universal gesture. It is understood by everyone, is generally unmistakable and clears atmosphere. One should be ware of an involuntary smile either on your face or on the others face , it could be sarcasm , it cannot be conducive to good relationship.
EYE CONTACT
Eye movement is a key part of facial behavior, directing others attention showing surprise or happiness and other emotional displays. Eye contact between speaker and listener is necessary for indicating that both are interested in the communication and to create a rapport with audience. The comfort level for eye contact is 3 seconds. If held longer than 3 seconds, it can cause discomfort to the other person.
Space
Individuals naturally maintain a certain space between
acquaintance and get closer to persons with closer relationship , we maintain a respectful distance from our superiors.
o It is important not to invade others space in any situation.
Time
A person who uses ones own time and other peoples time
wastefully , creates an impression of being inefficient and disorganized. A sense of timing in conducting meetings , in conveying good or bad news , in making presentation , generates respect and goodwill.
The non verbal aspects of the spoken words are known as paralanguage. It includes the qualities of the voice , the way we use our voice , as well as the sounds we make without uttering words. Its elements include: - Tone - Pitch - Pronunciation - Accent - Intonation
It is not negative absence of speech but a positive withdrawal or suspension of speech. Silence is a difficult method of communication to use as it takes a good deal of self control and self confidence to be able to hold ones tongue. Short pauses are used to emphasize a point.
Sign language apart from the set of signs is a system of communicating with people who are hearing impaired , by using hand movements rather than spoken words.

Posture is the way we hold ourselves, the way we stand or sit. It indicates something about our feelings and thoughts, attitudes and health. Posture refers to the carriage , state , attitude of body or mind.
GESTURES
Gestures are movements of hands / head / body ;they are a natural accompaniment of speech. Gesture refers to any significant movement of limb or body and a deliberate use of such movement as an expression of feeling.
Gesture can also be understood as step calculated to evoke response from another person or to convey intention.
Appropriateness for the occasion is essential , the formality of the occasion, the time of the day, the season , the cultural background of the people who will be present and the conventions of your own organization should provide good guidance
