What has COSEE meant for our science and careers?

Oscar Schofield, Josh Kohut, Scott Glenn Allowing us to combine teaching, research, and service

We are excited & motivated to engage in education/outreach, we are limited by time and energy, as our job descriptions call for:
Teaching undergraduates Teaching graduates In short we feel overloaded Mentoring post-doctoral researchers Mentor junior faculty Writing manuscripts Writing grants Writing progress reports Reporting findings at professional meetings Foster science communication via seminars Deal with increase in regulatory burden Manage labs Plan field expeditions Produce Federal reports Partake in community management Talk to University donors Work on Department committees Work on University committees Work on State committees Work on Federal committees Work on International committees Informal census for three scientists yield a required work week of 140-150 hours (thus we have created Scotscar Kohut)

SERVICE

TEACHING

COSEE NOW provides us a bridge to connect the professionals in science to the professionals in outreach to the professionals in education
COSEE provides tools that: L helps in nerd translation L provides a range of engagement possibilities that allow scientist to engage in the level they wish L Provides training to learn new modes to improve communication and content become part of a community in which to toss ideas around IN SHORT COSEE HELPS US IN TEACHING, RESEARCH AND OUTREACH

COSEE IMPACTS ON OUR CAREERS: TEACHING YEAR 2008

Mission : Can we cross the ocean with a glider? Year 2008: 6 students, all marine science majors Teaching mode: One professor, lecture based

East-West Distance Across: 5,500 km Longest Mission in 2006: 500 km

COSEE IMPACTS ON OUR CAREERS: TEACHING YEAR 2009

Mission : We will cross the ocean with a glider Year 2009: 22 students, ~70% marine science majors Teaching mode: 3 professors, lecture based, making web tools

Induction of Glider into Smithosian

Recovery of Glider

COSEE IMPACTS ON OUR CAREERS: TEACHING YEAR 2012

Mission : We will create a global ocean community while also creating a global community Year 2012: 75 students, ~50% marine science majors Teaching mode: 3 professors, team-based construction of tools/plans for a global network WE HAVE A LARGE MOTIVATED TECHNICAL TEAM NOW AVAILABLE TO US!

The world is changing. The ocean changes are dramatic and will alter Earth as we know it, the impact on future generations is not known. By the time I finish my professional career .

Outreach

We use COSEE NOW to expand into new media & technologies that would be daunting without partnership

Products for scientists :Why do science, science stories told by scientists

Products for scientists :Why do science, science stories told by scientists

4 part story of climate change & food webs: Zooplankton and why do we care?

Products for scientists :Why do science, science stories told by scientists

4 part story of climate change & food webs: Penguins and watching the world change in ones lifetime

4 part story of climate change & food webs: Technology and hopes to finding a new way to explore and solve problems

The current challenges and evolving nature of science will blur research, teaching and outreach. Not bringing our students and the public into our work will allow debate outside our nerd communities to be disconnected from our efforts.

COSEE is a force multiplier with tools that take advantage of modern social networking capabilities, skills, and assessment tools. COSEE helps scientists by improving teaching, improving research and improving outreach. COSEE makes our jobs easier. TO THE COSEE WORKERS, THANK YOU! WE SCIENTISTS-TEACHER-OUTREACH EXPERTS ARE NOT ALONE, WE ARE A TEAM
