Introduction Cont
Water Crisis is a general term used to describe a situation

where the available water within a region is less than the region's demand. Water Crisis has been used to describe the availability of portable water in a variety of regions by the United Nations and other world organizations. For example the Food and Agriculture Organization, said in 2003 that there isnt a Water Crisis but steps which must be taken to avoid one in the future. The major aspects of the Water Crisis is supposedly overall scarcity of usable water for consumption.

World Water Facts

884 million people lack access to safe water supplies;

approximately one in eight people .

3.575 million people die each year from water-related

disease.
The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through

disease than any war claims through guns.

Poor people living in the slums often pay 5-10 times more

per liter of water than wealthy people living in the same city.
An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water

than a typical person in a developing country slum uses in a whole day.

Children
Diarrhea remains the second leading cause of death among

children under five globally. Nearly one in five child deaths about 1.5 million each year is due to diarrhea. It kills more young children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined
Every 20 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease. Diarrhea is more prevalent in the developing world due, in

large part, to the lack of safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as poorer overall health and nutritional status.
Children in poor environments often carry 1,000 parasitic

worms in their bodies at any time.

In the developing world, 24,000 children under the age of five

die every day from preventable causes like diarrhea contracted from unclean water.
1.4 million children die as a result of diarrhea each year.

Environment
Less than 1% of the worlds fresh water (or about 0.007% of all

water on earth) is readily accessible for direct human use.

More than 80% of sewage in developing countries is discharged

untreated, polluting rivers, lakes and coastal areas.

The UN estimates that by 2025, forty-eight nations, with

combined population of 2.8 billion, will face freshwater stress or scarcity.

Agriculture is the largest consumer of freshwater by far: about

70% of all freshwater withdrawals go to irrigated agriculture.

Things Others Can Do (Two Projects for Getting Involved)

Water Projects International is a international relief organization that is dedicated to providing clean water to those who have none. We primarily focus our efforts in areas around the world that do not have any access to water or where people must walk more than two hours ever day for their water needs. Our main goal is to provide water sources to the local population that are basic yet productive, while focusing heavily on education which assures a high level of sustainability for all projects. http://www.waterprojectsinternational.org The United Nations World Water Assessment Program (WWAP) coordinates the work of 28 UN-Water members and partners in the World Water Development Report (WWDR). Monitor, assess and report on the world's freshwater resources and ecosystems, water use and management, and identify critical issues and problems; Help countries develop their own assessment capacity; Raise awareness on current and imminent/future water related challenges to influence the global water agenda; Learn and respond to the needs of decision-makers and water resource managers; Measure progress towards achieving sustainable use of water resources through robust indicators; and Support anticipatory decision-making on the global water system including the identification of alternative futures. http://www.unesco.org/new/en/naturalsciences/environment/water/wwap/about/

H2OOOOH! Cartoon! (Getting Kids Involved!)

This new international initiative has been devised by Gruppo

Alcuni in collaboration with the UNESCO Venice Office, regarding cartoons based on the theme of water, to promote scientific knowledge and more sustainable behavior among young people worldwide. Kids from all over the world are called to participate in a creative and amusing learning experience: create storyboards on water issues that will be transformed in a new 3-D animated television series of cartoons based on the famous "Pet Pals" characters.
